An upgrade of Samba to a version that supports smb2

Postby itsmarcos » Wed Jun 27, 2012 6:30 pm

SMB2 will definitely improve user experience is an upgrade to a samba version (>=3.6.0) that supports SMB2. At least to Vista and Win7/8 users.

There's has been a discussion here:

http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=160&t=60473

Synology users already nag about this: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=50423#p194662. It's about time that QNAP proactively tackles competition on a technical level.

We have major performance issues. Tested network packets between SMB and SMB2 on network mounts while using certain application . About 20 packets transfer on SMB2 vs few thousand on SMB.

SMBv3 is the way to go - SMBv2 alone is outdated. Newer Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 functionality _requires_ SMBv3.

PS: I guess the wait will be long. QNAP messed up seriously the latest firmware and their fixes backlog must be huge

Support for SMB2 already in the latest beta by Synology

http://www.synology.com/support/beta_dsm4.2.php?lang=us

They are even introducing "Large MTU Support for SMB2" that enhances speed even further.

Happy converter from a Drobo to a TS-659Pro+ now with a mix of discs in a RAID-5 (Hitachi, Samsung and WD) and a single disc that want to be replaced soon :-)
NAS: TS-659P+ | F/W: 3.6.1 Build 0302T | RAID-5 (I will check this later) + Single Disc (WD10EACS) | QPKG: IPKG, Pyload, AirVideo and some others | IPKG: nothing
N/W: Apple Airport Extreme Gigabit+802.11n, Airport Express 802.11n
