Support for 6TB HDD: 4K sectors and a trivial screw problem
1/
Support for native 4K Sectors as some vendors offer according drives:
Toshiba MG04ACA Series
Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD
But more important:
2/
These new drives currently doesn't fit into the actually drive trays as different screw holes are required (for not rack devices). The middle hole is either removed or moved to the back of the drives. I checked some trays in different TS-870/670 Pro devices and they are "missing" the last two holes.
See here (Seagate) or here (HGST) and here.

2014 manufactured QNAP NAS - at least some model lines - include trays with the 3rth row of screw holes required to accommodate two pairs of screws with these HDD.

As I was reading the thread, I was just thinking of posting a picture of something like a huge, Hilti SDS drill, then I scrolled down to your above post.

Hopefully people reading this thread realise that they should drill the extra holes in their drive trays and not into the actual drives

Re: Support for 6TB HDD: 4K sectors and a trivial screw prob
Any news?
I would like to buy the Seagte ST6000NM0024, there she is listed on the website as compatible to my QNAP TS259. But how can I tighten the hdd? Rich also 2 screws. the German Qnap support can´t help me because they either do not understand or do not want to help. He always replied that I should contact Seagate?
Sorry for my english. I´m from Germany and google Translator is my friend
Best regards

What news do you expect?Baenker wrote:Any news?
A. Were a users community here. Drill and countersink the the missing holes - or be happy with just two screws (perfectly enough in my opinion...).
B. QNAP Support? Not here, sorry - and nothing they can do. Your NAS HDD trays as delivered were matching all standard HDD available at time of design and delivery. At least you had not been aware that the SATA standard was extended some years back, and you had not complained on delivery (so no case of "Gewährleistung") as this would make an "obvious" issue.
C. As I've mentioned before, newer manufactured NAS trays come with three pairs (for all 3.5" variants) and two pairs for the 2.5" units. Check with the sellers of HDD trays if these come with six plus four holes as per the current standard before ordering replacement units.
D. And no, Seagate can't help either - lol.
Correct me if I'm wrong...
Grüsse,
-Kurt.

I can't understand why the seagate 6 TB is compatible? The Qnap support must be able to say how the Seagate was screwed or if they have new trays with 6 holes.
News in the sense of other users and how they solve the problem.
Are two screws really enough?

Well, a note somewhere might be helpful to reference - but form experience the majority of people deploying won't read it anyway.Baenker wrote:I can't understand why the seagate 6 TB is compatible?
Yeah, agreed. Had contact with the support in Munich or in the Netherlands? Will have a chat with Munich with em 2morrow.Baenker wrote:The Qnap support must be able to say how the Seagate was screwed or if they have new trays with 6 holes.
I don't want to argue here what is right or wrong. HDD makers might argue you need to use all. Don't know how many HDD I've seen the last 20 years fit with one or two screws only. Haven't seen any screws becoming loose - unless it's note carefully mounted. No, don't overstress the threads (and screw) - otherwise, the HDD side will fail if applying to high torque. Let me guess - 80-20 or more 90-10 ... 80..90 will install it with just two, 20..10% might rework the trays or look out for new new ones.Baenker wrote:Are two screws really enough?

Please ask if QNAP can provide new trays with six holes as well.
