Upgrading 2TB drives to 4TB drives

Post by Sriro »

Hi all.

I have a TS-410 that has 4 2TB drives in raid 5 (no hot swap).

I purchased 4 new 4TB drives (yes they are on the HCL).

I pulled drive number 4 (dev3) and put in one of the new drives. The volume management screen would not load after I put in the new drive. I telneted to the qnap box and checked, it said that drive 4 was not there. I looked in the log file and it showed that drive 4 had been removed and that a new one had been inserted.

After about 4 hours I swapped the original drive back in, and the Volume management screen immediately popped up, and the drive started to rebuild.

My question is what did I do wrong? And before you ask I did not do a backup because I do not have that kind of space available - which is why I have a NAS.

I was following the instructions from here http://cdonner.com/qnap-raid-expansion.htm but I am guessing that I missed / forgot something.

Thanks in advance.

just wondering why you chose to use instructions from else where and not qnap.com?
