Replacing HDD in TS410

Post by macnap »

Help appreciated.

One of my 1TB HDD in my TS410 is starting to reach SMART error threshold (Reallocated_Sector_CT: Threshold 005, Raw 5) and needs replacing. Currently I have four 1T HDDs filling the four bays. To replace this drive, can I replace it with a 2TB HDD and fully utilise the space? The NAS is presently set up in a RAID 5 configuration.

Yew you can replace it with a larger drive. No it will not use the space until all drives are replaced with larger ones.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

NAS: TVS-882BR | F/W: 5.0.1.2346 | 40GB | 2 x 1TB M.2 SATA RAID 1 (System/VMs) | 3 x 1TB M.2 NMVe QM2-4P-384A RAID 5 (cache) | 5 x 14TB Exos HDD RAID 6 (Data) | 1 x Blu-ray
NAS: TVS-h674 | F/W: 5.0.1.2376 | 16GB | 3 x 18TB RAID 5
Apps: DNSMasq, PLEX, iDrive, QVPN, QLMS, MP3fs, HBS3, Entware, DLstation, VS, +

Thanks. To confirm, can I just shut the NAS down, replace the drive and then restart and expect the NAS to rebuild the RAID automatically? I kept on reading that one needs to wait for the NAS to get into 'degraded' mode before changing the drive. I assume this is not necessarily so. Right?

No. Drives should be hot swapped. Proper procedure is to pull the drive while powered up. Wait for NAS to go into degraded mode and then replace the drive. As always have a backup of your data in case something goes wrong.

Oh, thanks for that. I have always thought it's one of the worst things to do to disconnect networks without warning. Would never have been game to just pull a drive out while it's still running.

SATA drives are designed to be pulled/installed with power on. If you look at the power connector, you will discover that the ground connection is first/last.

As a side note... just because SATA drives are designed to be hot-swapped, not all configurations support it. NAS boxes that allow you to easily remove drives are those that do. But, when it comes to other computers, be it Linux, Mac, or M$, the SATA drives are not meant to be removed with power on. The OS won't like it. If part of a RAID config, then yes. Or, if in a physical tray that allows for removal and the OS is told that it is a removable device. Just sayin'.

Tried it out and hot swapped one of the four HDDs. Worked perfectly. Thanks to all!
