I know this is going to sound like a complete newby question--but, thats exactly what it is...
Why would you want to create separate volumes on the NAS? What is best practice here? The reason I'm asking is because I essentially have three uses for the NAS--iSCSi connections that store my backup exec files and it runs OwnCloud for a locally manage cloud for my business and the third being our safety team giving employees access to files... I have two volumes... one is the primary volume (not maxed out) that stores the backups and the second volume is used for our safety team to store files on the NAS... Owncloud stores to the primary volume by default and can't be changed...
Break it down for me people!

Re: Why create separate volumes?
I have no idea. I have a single RAID5 Volume here, and I am very happy with it.accarby wrote:I know this is going to sound like a complete newby question--but, thats exactly what it is...

Re: Why create separate volumes?
One reason is a safety thing. Let's say you have a single volume and your backups go crazy one weekend and fill the volume. Your other services relying on that volume are now likely down. With different volumes you would protect your data a little.
Another is that many of us nerds are a little OCD even on our best days so separating can make us feel a little warm inside.

Re: Why create separate volumes?
I concede this point, however I have plenty space left on my NAS, so this is pretty low risk for me. When using multiple volumes, you have multiple volumes to worry about over-filling. On the other hand, you do have a point that storing your Backups on a non-booting Volume alleviates this danger.kbk00 wrote:One reason is a safety thing. The issue here is that "owncloud" always installs to the ".qpkg" directory on the primary volume, so your argument doesn't wash, unless you can "safely" move your Owncloud configuration to a secondary volume, which is not supported, but might be possible.

Re: Why create separate volumes?
That makes perfect sense. When I originally configured my NAS, I assigned ALL of my available space to a single volume... that didn't really give me any wiggle room with seperating different purposes... I couldn't shrink it, so I was just screwed. This time around I didn't allocate all to a single volume...
Thanks for the help!

I wasn't arguing. I was answering his question on why one would want different volumes.pwilson wrote: so your argument doesn't wash.
