Alternative to Q-Raid when replacing disk

Post by FlashNAS »

Hi,

I'm trying to replace a faulty 1TB disk in a TS112, with a new larger 3TB disk. I followed the usual instructions to sync the disk via e-Sata port using Q-Raid1, but this fails after about 24 hours, with the logs suggesting "perhaps the destination disk may be full", which it is not, having copied over only around 186GB.

Is there an alternative way of copying over the content of the internal disk?

Would Acronis perhaps do this?

Appreciate any suggestions.

No, Acronis will NOT work. Clonezilla, gparted or similar will NOT work either. Been there, done that. When the drive is already almost dead, too late for Q-RAID anyway. Backup what you can, set up from scratch, restore backup.

Thanks,
Still no Build number for me?

Anyway, what is probably the easiest thing to do now would be to install the NAS on the new drive, and then attach the original drive via USB/eSATA.

Image

The original drive will mount on your NAS as "/share/USBDisk1/", "/share/USBDisk2/", "/share/USBDisk3/", etc
Your original NAS data will be in "/share/USBDisk3/". (3rd partition on the external drive)

File Station or "/usr/bin/cp" commands will allow you to copy the data back to /share/HDA_DATA (NAS drive).

Hi Patrick.

Thank you so much for your help.

Apologies, the build number: 4.1.2 build 0126.

Would your File Station/copy commands transfer all content/data/settings including the qpkg applications and their settings, and include any permissions, and be bootable?

Thanks Again,
F

No it will not. This however can be worked around, as you can copy everything over from the command line, and can restore your previous settings to the newly rebuilt NAS after the fact. I'll be happy to assist in this regard. Please check your "Configuration Backup" directory before you start to ensure that you actually have a "configuration backup" to restore.

Please access your NAS via SSH, (login as "admin"), and run:

Code: Select all

ls -alF /share/HDA_DATA/.@backup_config/

Please cut&paste this output back to this message thread.

Thank you Patrick that's really good of you. Apart from some general data in the network shares, its particularly the Asterisk qpkg and settings I want to preserve. Here is the output as instructed:

I haven't carried out any copying as yet, due to the Asterisk question, but have checked Filestation which seems to only show only the shares I've set up. Am I correct in presuming the default operating system is automatically copied to the newly inserted disk upon start up and I'd use Filestation to setup and copy over shares and their contents? (Sorry if my presumption is incorrect, I'm not experienced with NAS/Linux).

Many thanks,
J

We won't be using File Station for this task for very much the reasons you just stated.

Your Feb 4th Configuration Backup looks to be intact.

We can restore it after we have copied your data over. It looks like a go to get started. Please remove your internal drive, and set it aside. Setup the NAS on the new drive, and then attach the original drive via USB or eSATA.

When you get this far, please post back to this thread, and let me know whether you used "USB" or "eSATA".

Hi Patrick,

I'm just doing your last steps now. Sorry for the delay. I'm attaching the external drive via eSata.

Be extremely grateful if you could advise on the next steps to copy over the Asterisk qpkg and settings.

Many thanks,

I can't help with Asterisk. i'm not an Asterisk user. I can't help with anything, without more information about your existing configuration and wanted future configuration of your NAS. Please access your NAS via SSH, login as "admin" and run:

Hi Patrick,

I'm not hoping for help on Asterisk don't worry - only mirroring the current disk if possible.
I just want to mirror the current setup, but with the larger disk.

I didn't run the second line as:
[~] # !/bin/sh
-sh: !/bin/sh: event not found

Should I continue?

Many thanks,
J

See below, didn't output bottom

Code: Select all

line so let me know if I need to run it again. It seems pasting it in straight from this website using firefox, includes some characters putty doesn't like.
