RAID 5 not active with one HDD Read/Write Error

Post by eagle241 »

I have had a mishap where our QNAP TS419P II accidentally has been dropped and 3 of the 4 HDD popped out of their sockets.
I left the NAS running and re-seated the drives (hot swap).

I the tried to access the NAS via the Web interface - no luck, I then tried through QNAP Finder, still no luck.

Rebooted the NAS using the Select/Enter button on the front of then NAS.

After the Re-Boot I managed to log into it via the Web UI.

I then checked the Storage Manager and found 2 S.M.A.R.T Warnings on HDD1 & HDD4 and also that HDD4 have a Disk Read/Write Error
Screenshot 2015-08-02 10.30.38.png
I then checked the RAID Management Tab and found that the RAID was Not Active.

I then unplugged drive 4 - re-booted the NAS and after the re-boot plugge drive 4 back in.

Now the RAID management tab show me that I have a single disk: Drive 1 - uninitialized and RAID still Not Active

I have logged a support ticket with QNAP, however since it is the weekend I don't know when I will hear from them.

I have searched the forum and Google in hope to find a solution to this exact issue, but without luck. As I am not very comfortable to start using the command line without some sort of guidance I am now asking if there are someone here on the forum that could possible help me with this issue.

My sytem details are as following:

Re: RAID 5 not active with one HDD Read/Write Error

Post by pwilson »

Hot-swap HDD4 with a suitable replacement unpartitioned/unformatted drive. Wait for the RAID5 array to rebuild. If successful, then you can hot-swap HDD1 thereafter.

Re: RAID 5 not active with one HDD Read/Write Error

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I hot swapped the failed HDD4 with a brand new WD Red 4TB drive and the display still kept showing after HDD4 removed after 15min. I then rebooted the NAS and now the Volume Management tab shows all 4 drives as being ready however the RAID is still Not Active. I did try the Recover in the Web Interface but without any luck.

The log entry tells me: RAID Recovery Failed: Not enough devices to start the array.

I also ran a new NAS report:

Re: RAID 5 not active with one HDD Read/Write Error

Thank you for your quick reply.

I hot swapped the failed HDD4 with a brand new WD Red 4TB drive and the display still kept showing after HDD4 removed after 15min. I then rebooted the NAS and now the Volume Management tab shows all 4 drives as being ready however the RAID is still Not Active. I did try the Recover in the Web Interface but without any luck.

The log entry tells me: RAID Recovery Failed: Not enough devices to start the array.

I also ran a new NAS report:

Any suggestion to what I might need to do now?

Thanks

You have no RAID5 array at all, and never did. Your RAID1 array only has a single drive in it (HDD4). Please provide accurate information about your NAS. I can't do anything for you based on incorrect information provided.

Re: RAID 5 not active with one HDD Read/Write Error

I'm sorry but I don't understand?

I am certain that my NAS was setup as RAID 5 before HDD4 failed.

If I have been providing incorrect information, what other information would you need to help out.

You input and help is very much appreciated.

Check the NASReport output you already provided. There is no RAID5 volume present at all. It shows a RAID1 array that uses HDD4, which is missing it's "mirror" drive. If you did in fact have a RAID5 volume, it no longer exists at all. Setup your NAS from scratch, and restore your data from your Backups. (This is the exact situation which explains why it is important to always make frequent Backups).

Important data is always Backed Up; Unimportant data isn't.

How recent is your most recent Backup?

Now - I'm really concerned as I do not have a backup of my array - yes I know a very bad oversight on my part.

Are you then telling me that there are no way to re-create the RAID 5 array?

If that is the case what is you experience in getting my data back?

Yup. :(

At least not with the help of QNAP NAS Community. Please submit a ticket with the QNAP Helpdesk for further assistance. It's a shame you didn't make regular Backups, as this data loss was completely preventable simply by making Backups.

It is a shame you demonstrated such contempt for your own data. If it makes you feel any better, I learned about Backups the hard way too. (I lost 5.4TB of data myself when I was equally callous with my own data). Invest in an eSATA/USB3.0 Drive Dock. (I paid <$50USD for mine). These handy devices make it a lot easier to do your Backups, and saves you the expense of purchasing multiple drive enclosures for your Backup media.

Let's not blame the user here - at least not for the NAS coming up with a more than strange status after replacing a suspect broken HDD.

I wasn't blaming anyone. Backups would have resolved this issue easily. His data was unimportant anyway, so there is no problem,

I can report that I have got my RAID back with help from QNAP support.
The whole process took less than 20 min to solve with Artyr from QNAP remote controlling via Team viewer.

My RAID is now rebuilding and I'm running a backup on the more critical data.

By the way my data is NOT unimportant.

Glad Birger has his RAID back...

Wasn't thinking on you Patrick - just had QNAP in mind: Things like these should never happen...
