SMART Current_Pending_Sector warning - What to do?

Post by clickclick »

I just got a SMART warning on one of my drives, specifically around the Current_Pending_Sector count. I've also done a SMART Complete Scan and got the same result. I can't seem to find any option to do additional scans or fix the problem.

My questions are:
I see in another thread that the advice is to HOT SWAP the faulty drive for a new one. Is that the best/only option I have?
Is this something that can be fixed?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Basic info below:
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.10.4
NAS model: TS-419P+
Firmware: 4.1.4 Build 20150522
Network: Single port

Drive Configuration: RAID5
Number of drives: 4
Drive Manufacturer: Samsung
Drive Model: HD204UI
Drive Firmware revision (if available): 1AQ10001
(All 4 drives are the same model)

According to the web interface the RAW VALUE of Current_Pending_Sector is "1".

Here's a dump of the SMART info from the problematic drive:

Code: Select all

There is absolutely nothing the NAS can do here:

A HDD does have it's own controller, with own software. As a part of it, a HDD vendor does reserve a certain amount of spare blocks. If the HDD firmware does experience issues - being on writing or reading a block of data (potentially what you see as "Raw Read Error Rate", too) - it does start a recovery process. Depending on the outcome, the HDD firmware does decide to continue using the same block - or mark the block to be replaced by a spare sector. This is the status you see with the "Current Pending Sector" ... it's pending to be replaced. One would expect that this "job" would be done within a reasonable time at normal HDD run time and/or during a full check, and problem-fix process.

In general, the "Current Pending Sector" is a temporary issue only. If the block will be replaced form the spare pool, the "Reallocated Sector Counter" will increment, resp. the number of spare blocks decrements.

If the apparently the same Current Pending Sector does remain there, and even more if the number is raising - take it as an early notification to trigger a HDD replacement. Considering the age of the HD204UI, power-on time of almost three years, resp. a spin-up time of two years ... time to look-out for funding to replace the HDD.

These three years are about the operational expectations for consumer desktop drives.

Regards,
-Kurt.

Thank for the insight. Looks like it's time for a new drive... or drives.
