Dead Disk Disposal

Post by AlanB1351 »

I've got a dead disk.
Can't use any wiping tools becasuse the disk is dead.
What's the best way of ensuring the data on the platters is destroyed?

Cut it in half (chop saw) or drill holes through it and get the nastiest liquid you can get (muratic acid) and pour in. Or other physical destruction ....... Be SAFE :-0 :-0

put a nail through it .. if anyone restores the data from that (VERY difficult)... they could instead steal the intact NAS and waterboard you for the access codes :!: (if they really want that data so badly)

HDDs are easily opened up with torx drivers. You can then take the platters out and scratch the surfaces. Please recycle.

Thank you. I will try opening up with a torx screw driver first and if I fail it's all down to a nail and big hammer!

I've opened several drives over the years, including within the last 6 months.
