Data Loss after Crash during Raid5 Expansion from 3 to 4 discs

Post by zebramusiker »

I have a TS-419P II, Firmware 4.2.0 Build 20160130, with 4 discs.

Before disaster striked I had a working Raid 5 system with 3 active discs (Drive 1-3) and 1 global spare disk (Drive 4) .

When storage capacity became low, I took the spare disc and changed it to a free disc and expanded the Raid 5 from 3 to 4 discs.

The NAS system started to rebuild.

After a week the front LEDs were still blinking red/green, but there was no noise from the discs.
I pressed the Power button. It did not shut down orderly.

I am pretty sure that the Raid 5 expansion did not finish.

I took out all discs and gave back power.
Short beep and then a long beep. So Hardware is OK.

Then beginning with disc 1, I gave all discs back into the NAS while it was running.

After several minutes the web interface is looking totally different. NAS is on another IP address, gave me two options, to destroy my data or to rebuilt. The later I decided.

Now I ended up with a Raid only consisting of Drive 1 and 3. Disk 2 is shown as Single Disk. And disk 4 is not shown under Logical Volume at all.

Is there anything I can do to mount Drive 2 and 4 to get back my data???

Any help appreciated!

Thx,
Christian

I do hope that you have external backups of your data. Open a helpdesk ticket with QNAP and hopefully they'll be able to resolve your problem.

Data restored! :) :) :)

Here is what I did.

Since the NAS crashed during Raid 5 Expansion from 3 to 4 discs I started with the following assumption:

Some data might be still available on
-Discs #1, #2 and #3 in a Raid 5 config with 3 disc
-Discs #1, #2, #3 and #4 in a Raid 5 config with 4 discs

Sucessful was the second trial; the 4 discs Raid 5 config but I mounted only discs #1, #3 and #4 in a PC since #2 had been "unmounted" in the NAS.

Besides that I worked through this procedure starting with chapter 6 https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to ... esktop-pcs

The free ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery software delivers all necessary instructions how the data can be restored with R-Studio (http://www.r-studio.com).
The R-Studio software costs $ 80.-

Took 6 days in total. Got all files back with all folder names and correct file names.

Learned a lot. Backup your data!!!!
