Migrating from multiple disk to single disk to raid 5 in future

Post by lowfi »

Hi

I have a ts453 with 1 storage pool (1 disk) and separate 3 single disks. These disks all vary in size/brand/etc. My plan is the following:

1) Replace all disk with a single 8TB drive
2) In future when prices go down migrate to raid 5 (3 disks 8TB each)
3) add ssd for VMs/temp disk etc

Im aware of the following link: http://docs.qnap.com/nas/4.2.1/cat2/en/ ... groups.htm

What i dont know for sure however is when you have a empty NAS that the first disk you add should always be a member of a storage pool? This storage pool disk cannot be migrated to first raid1 and later on to raid5. Or can it?

FYI its not important that current data on disks is preserved.

Thanks
