Encrypted Volume Disappeared After Reboot?

Post by nicholasg92486 »

My photo encrypted folder disappears after a reboot and none of my photos are there anymore. Is this a common problem with encrypted folders? or can I trust qnap to be able to hold my encrypted folders without losing them? I want encryption, but not at the lose of all my files

Not enough info. No NAS model given. No firmware version and build number. Why are you rebooting?

Model: TS-453A
Firmware: 4.2.1 Build 20160311
Reason: The web server couldn't be reached outside my LAN.

Did you first attempt to reach the web server from inside the LAN?

Is this the first reboot since upgrading to 4.2.1 20160311? In other words, you didn't have this issue until this version?

Lastly... I'm curious as to why you need to encrypt.

Yes and I was able to access it from inside my lan. No, i've done around 20 or more reboots with this build and I want to keep my data safe in case the drives are stolen

I have no further questions, as I now have no clue as to why it is happening. As a last ditch idea, power the NAS down completely and remove the power cord and wait about 10 secs for the power to drain, so that all of the hardware gets a clean reset. If that doesn't get things working, a QNAP support ticket is in order.

I do hope that you are doing backups.

But, if your drives, or the NAS is stolen with the drives, your data is still not safe, as you no longer have the data. I doubt that any thief is going to want your photos, encrypted or not. They'll just want to sell the drives for money. Also, if your drives are used in a RAID5 configuration, the drives won't be readily readble by any thief, even if not encrypted. How many thieves that rob homes have any smarts to know how to deal with RAID5 drives. Again, all they want is money for the hardware.

An encrypted volume would be listed in the Storage Manager:
Encrypted Volume.PNG
An Encrypted Folder would become visible in the Shared Folders with the Encryption Management Action icon:
Encrypted Folder - Shared Folder.PNG
Probably simply not unlocked - regardless?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I had a backup so no data was lost, but that isn't the point and for you to suggest raid 5 or the stupidity of others to keep my data safe is just a horrible suggestion that shouldn't be suggested to anyone, ever! Data will always be more valuable to people then hardware, even thieves.

I know how to lock and unlock my shared encrypted folder. Thank you, though.

I disagree.

The data will indeed be more valuable to the owner, but not thieves. Thieves that rob houses could not care less about your data. They want the hardware in order to sell it. In many cases that money is used to buy drugs. Data is worth absolutely nothing. If you still do not believe me, check with your local police as to why houses are robbed, including as to what thieves are after and why.

So it's about an encrypted shared folder ... and not on an encrypted volume?

Does the shared folder show up in the Control Panel - Shared Folders? Note: It's a paged list.

same pb

Post by landsteph »

Hi,

I am having the same issue.

QTS 4.2.1 - 20160601
TS569-Pro
2 raid volumes
Grp1 RADI-0 Bay1&2 : encrypted volume but with auto unlock
Grp2 RAID-1 Bay3&4 : encrypted volume but without auto unlock.

I already stop & start without any pb before.

Now, I have two pools (one for each raid) but no volume inside so I can't unlock.

Please say me you found a solution ...
