Can't format new QNAP639

Postby jober69 » Fri Apr 24, 2009 4:52 am

I am having trouble setting up my QNAP 639. I have 6 x 1.5TB SeaGate hard drives in the bays and the NAS sees them. I updated the firmware to 2.1.5 before doing anything. Then I tried to setup raid5 but I got an error drive 5 might have bad blocks so I checked the drive in a XP box and it was bad. I then RMAed the drive and reinstalled it. I try again to format and I get Formatting Failed, Formatting Failed (Cannot unmount disk). I have tried removing 2 of the drives but that didn't help. The drives have firmware ver. CC1H.
I need help!

Well at this point I don't know if things are getting better or worse. I set disks 1234 in raid5 and formatted them but now it's not showing disk1 and the status shows in-degraded mode also the NAS seems to be locked up. Oh, and the web UI wont come up.
GO QNAP! :x

Ok, I pulled disk1 deleted disk volume and setup the raid5 with disks 2, 3 and 4 and it's formatted.
The QNAP639 seems to be fine. I still need to test the three disks to confirm they are bad.
Is it possible the QNAP is killing the drives?
So, for the record I now HATE Seagate. And it's official, I have the worst luck with hard drives. I guess it was time seeing how I have never got a DOA or faulty drive TILL NOW!
Maybe I should hold up on patting myself on the back until the thing is finished synchronizing.

I'd be very surpised if QNAP was killing your drives, I'm confident that Seagate manages to do that all by itself...

You're right about that. But you have to admit it is odd to get 4 bad hard drive out of 6.

I'm happy to report that I have just had the pleasure of seeing the word "READY" in the status box. I have started copying 37GB of pictures to the NAS. I need someing on the NAS to see what happens when I try to add the other three drives to the raid array after I get them back from the RMA process.

I saw this on a batch of MicroStorage drives (equiv. to orig. Compaq drives), where three of 8 was **.
I was surprised as well...

It was shocking to get that many bad drives but New Egg is good with RMA support. I have added another drive and it took FOREVER.
But so far I like the NAS. I just need to read up on the Surveillance Station section. I was thinking about adding 4 IP cams to the house but I don't know if this is the right product to be using for this.

If you want to use this, make sure that you use cameras that is tested and approved, otherwise you will get challenges.
