Of course, it's unacceptable to leave a major file system bug pending for so long...

However, as QNAPAlex pointed out, it seems to occur when at the same time the file system is almost full AND free memory is less than 160MB.
On my ARM-based TS-412, I had 142 MB free memory and 110 GB (less than 5%) free disk space. I stopped the transmission and "download manager" (piece of **) services, went back to 170 GB free memory, and ... miracle... my QNAP now performs significantly better, not expected performance yet (especially when creating files or folders), but "hiccups" are less frequent and shorter.

That's not the only symptom - I have over 40% available space (almost 5TB on my Raid6 8x2TB setup), and always have plenty of RAM available. The issue I get regularly is the whole NAS stalls for up to 40 seconds when the filesystem decides to search for free space when I copy a new file to it.

From my own experience (TS-412 with 4 x 1.5TB drives, RAID5), it´s all about the free disk space...

... with about 2.5% free disk space, I too have the problem of 0.8MB/s write speed with alternating transfer speed peaks and drops.

Just for the purpose of testing, I moved enough files to another external drive to have about 5.5% free space on the RAID, the write speed went back to normal. Despite the fact that memory was rather low because of many services running and CPU load being high because of HD bad block checks on all 4 drives simultaneously.

Sure, I can just remember to keep 200GB free on the system and regard it as "full" when it´s up to 95% filled, but honestly, I am not a huge fan of mitigating the problem like that, a fix would be nicer, really...

If the issue didn't come up until the drive had only 200GB free, I would be very happy. With mine it still had somewhere between -21TB free on a 12TB drive when it started happening.

YES that bug is annoying... BUT I don't fill up any share / drive on whatever device (PC/ Macbook/ notebook / USB drive / NAS / smartphone ...) more than 85 to 90 %.

So why should I expect a QNAP is working better with a heavier load?

As I already mentioned there: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=42472&start=15#p249982

Sorry, we get what we have payed ...

Are you actualy telling me I should be happy with this? Is this a joke? We're not talking aout a slow down here! My NAS totaly locks up and will NOT write anything! Theres no way im going to sit back and accept that i cant use my extra 800Gb. I might aswell build my own NAS!

Hi 2000wolf,
but what you're saying is crazy. If I buy 1 stupid USB disk, I can fill it until it's totally full. So, I expect to be able to fill my storage (QNAP NAS) completely; I'm not asking for super-performances with 95% disk full but, at least, to be able to write until there's space. That is exactly what I've payed for.

Is QNAP NAS Firmware 3.6.0 Build0210 a kernel fix?

I have been optimistic enough to try a 3.6.0 beta version on my TS-412 and can report no improvement whatsoever on the "disk nearly full, write speed collapses" issue, but maybe that ominous kernel update (provided the QNAP guys ever dig to the root of this issue, it doesn´t seem so, yet...) is not included in these early beta versions...

QnapAlex said here that it was looking as if the kernel upgrade will be ready in the end of Q1. Since we're only half way into Q1, quite logically it isn't in 3.6.0.

"Logically" Qnap would work harder and faster to release a kernel update.. Over a year of problems for us users and possible data loss is not OK!!

I don't understand why you are releasing new firmware with new features when your CORE BUSINESS is still broken.

I've been a longtime user of QNAP and until now have happily recommended them to friends and family but I will never be recommending a QNAP to a business as a result of the poor handling of this issue. 3 months ago we were told it would take "several weeks" to test a new kernel... this is quite reasonable, what is not is 3 months going by with no further information and a new software release that is still based on the old kernel.

For reference, I'm not encountering the problem, but if I was I'd be demanding a full refund as the software is not fit for purpose.

I agree.

But if they were to release the fix 1.5 months ahead of schedule (I doubt that have ever happened with any software release) I can assure you that they wouldn't keep it a secret.

There is no point in expecting it before the end of Q1 unless somebody from Qnap tell you the schedule have changed. As with any software it may of course also slip into Q2 if they during testing run into unexpected problems that needs to be fixed. If so, hopefully they will keep the community informed about that as well...
