Did you check prior to buying if your NAS supports the drive?
If I recall correctly the 509 does not support such big disks. And depending on the board revision it may not even support 3tb drives.

according to other topics for example

i can use this type of drives when i put them in the bays.

But i want to use a same drive connected to an external port instead of the the bays

If I remember correctly not all 509's will support drives over 2tb. Only later models will because they changed the motherboard.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

In addition, the external enclosure itself might have such a limitation (I presume you talk about an external USB disk enclosure in which you put your WD?).

I have an old external USB/FireWire enclosure (ICYDOCK) for which the manual explicitly says that only disks up to 2 TB are supported.

Use the search feature and search the forum. There is at least one thread that describes how to tell what board you have. If you want an answer from QNAP you will need to open a ticket.

SOLVED Re: 4 TB USB drive

Post by jl-p »

I have the solution.
I contacted Western Digital because my windows machine didn't recognize it also as 1677 gb
So they let me write the complete disk with zeros with the windlg tool.
after that my nas recognized it as 3.6tb zo it is now formating.

thanks for the help from you
