Hi All,
I have a qnap-870-rp (Firmware 4.05) and have just installed a REXP-1600U to increase the capacity.
The setup on the main unit is one raid 6 volume across the 8 x 4tb disks.
There is no storage pool, as I think this was not an option with the firmware version at the time.
What I would like to do is have one large volume across both units, due to the curent setup it doesn't give me the option to expand the volume (which I gather would not be the case if it was on a storage pool).
SO...my plan is as follows
1. Create a new storage pool with the 16 x 4tb disks in the expansion unit.
2. Create a volume on that with a new share.
3. Copy the data from the original volume to the new one.
4. Delete the old volume and shares
5. add the disks from the old volume to the new storage pool
6. Expand the new volume
Does that sound like it would work, are the any pitfalls to doing this if I delete the only volume on the main unit etc?
Any thoughts much appreciated.

Re: Expansion Queries
I would open a ticket with QNAP support and run this by them. Also step 0 should be to create a backup of your data.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Re: Expansion Queries
Thanks, good point have logged a case with support to get their thoughts.
Not sure I can back it up due to the size, it's not prduction data, it's essentially stuff that has been previoulsy archived to tape and then restored for reference so worse case scenario it can be re-restored.

Re: Expansion Queries
Sounds like this would work.
Obviously, you can't add the disks per se to the new RAID group on REXP, you would create new RAID group on TS870 header and add this to be pool once you've deleted/recreated original RG.

Re: Expansion Queries
Really? You create separate RAID groups, one on expansion and one on head and add to the pool

Re: Expansion Queries
Yes I understand the concepts of how it will look/work once in place.
Perhaps I mis-interpreted your reply but it reads like you're suggesting deleting the original volume first which is not what I outlined in my original post?

Re: Expansion Queries
No just as you stated but build rg 1 on expansion, then delete orig rg, recreate as rg 2 and add to pool
