Stop syncing

Post by nizu »

Hi all,
how can I stop a RAID1 sync? Is it safe to force a shutdown?
This is my situation, in my QNAP 412 I've 4 disk in raid 1 (drive1+drive2 and drive3+drive4)
This is the story:
  • drive1+drive2 start syncing
after about 24 hours it finished
started the check disk on drive 3
after 12 hours it was still at 0%
    had to force the shutdown
after the reboot i've got many errors and it started automatically the sync of drive1+drive2, again
can i stop it without have other problems?

Huh, and what's exactly this "many errors"? Why would you want to stop the sync in the first place? Not enough problems yet?

First of all thanks for the reply

The most significative error is "The file system is not clean", it was already displayed even before of the story...

I need to access to my file in the next 24 hours, and it started about 1 hour ago and it's still at 0%. Any suggestion?

Here the log of the last week

Absolutely NOT a valid reason to stop sync by another forced reboot (which it exactly what in fact causes this warning). Other than that, are you actually planning to replace your clearly failing drives, or...

Code: Select all

"569","Error","2014-09-02","20:50:56","System","127.0.0.1","localhost","[HDD SMART] HDD 4 Rapid Test result: Completed: read failure."
"567","Error","2014-09-02","20:50:22","System","127.0.0.1","localhost","[HDD SMART] HDD 3 Rapid Test result: Completed: read failure."
Hope you have a recent backup. You have two drives that don't work properly in the same RAID-1 apparently. Stop caring about unclean filesystem warnings and focus on urgent issues.

I'm surprised you answered him at all.
  1. No Firmware Version/Build numbers information Provided
  2. No HDD Make/Model information provided.
  3. Bogus HDD Configuration provided.
  4. Bogus NAS Model provided.
Only way he got 4 drives into a RAID1 array is if he did it manually. The Firmware will only permit 2 drives in RAID1.
His message claims TS-412. His Forum profile however errantly claims TS-411U.

The only thing worse than No Information, is Bogus Information.

@doktornotor: those errors now are not there anymore. but now when I try to make a SMART check, it stop at 90%...but it's running a sync, so maybe it's not the right moment to test. Right?

@pwilson: yes, sorry. here some additional information:
- firmware version 4.1.0 build 20140612
- the raid was done manually
- i've a TS-412, profile updated thanks
- drive 1:WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N080.0
- drive 2: WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N080.0
- drive 3: WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB051.0
- drive 4: WDC WD20EARX-00PASB051.0 (maybe the differences from 3 and 4 cause the file system unclean problem)

Sigh.

1/ Wait for sync to finish before running any SMART tests.
2/ Run SMART tests, look at SMART info.
3/ You have 4 drives in a single RAID-1, effectively wasting 6TB of disk space? The point being? Or what's the RAID configuration? Noone here can provide support for some homebrew RAID.
4/ WD20EARS is NOT compatible, plus completely unsuitable for RAID. Kindly see the HCL

Good luck. Sanitize your NAS configuration and replace the above with a compatible drive.

Yes, I think I will wait for it.

Anyway I have 2 raid 1. the first with drive 1 e 2 with 4 TB, and the second with 2 TB. I've had no choice with the hard drives I have. I think 2 new WD40EFRX are urgent...

Thanks guys
