HDD SMART Warning Implications

Post by Budgie »

Hi, I have been doing some housekeeping on my TS-559 Pro II and found a warning against one parameter on Disk 1:-
Reallocated_Sector_Ct. I assume this means reallocated sector count and the count given is 4. Threshold is given as 036 and Worst Value 100. Should I be alarmed? Any advice as to whether I should be rushing to buy a new drive or can I watch it every week or so for creeping increase?

Seagate ST32000645NS 0004 2TB in RAID 5 configuration.
Not sick enough for warranty claim but still under warranty (they were on 5 years when purchased).

Having a drive available is easier said than done as these are difficult to obtain now as they have been discontinued. Very difficult to find anybody prepared to say that more recent drives will offer plug in replacement capability.
In fact my only problem with NAS boxes is with the life of the drive "availability." In fact the seller of the NAS suggested I should buy a spare drive right from the start!
Cheers.

You have 130+ messages to your credit, yet we still have to remind you to provide basic information every time you ask questions. Going forward please consider creating your own Forum Signature, and populating it with the information requested in article: When you're asking a question, please include the following.

It would be a lot easier to help you if we didn't need to badger you for basic information every time you post a question.

Perhaps we could provide a reasonable answer to your question with the output of the Smart information. Please login to your NAS via SSH, login as "admin", and run the following commands:

Code: Select all

echo "NAS Model: $(getsysinfo model)"
echo "Firmware: $(getcfg system version) Build $(getcfg system 'Build Number')"
echo "HDD1:
get_hd_smartinfo -d 1
#done

Please cut&paste the output of these commands back to this message thread.

"Snipping" the command that produced the output is pointless, but assuming you actually ran the command I provided, I would suggest that 4 "Reallocated_Sector"s is 4 too many. This suggests that your drive has run out of "spare" sectors to use, so has been forced to reallocate them.

I would suggest contacting Seagate Support to claim warranty on that drive. They may want you to run Seatools against the drive before they will accept it for RMA.

Hi Patrick,
The snip was because I garbled the command first time. It ran OK and you can see the output. Thanks for the advice re warranty. I was not sure if this fault would be accepted as the output indicates that 36 sectors might be the threshold. I shall however pursue it.

I believe I must give Seagate the serial number. Is it possible to get this through software or do I have to remove the drive?

I shall let you know how I get on with Seagate for the benefit of other users.
Many thanks once more.
