Hi All
This thread is basically about file sharing, even though it is motivated by an issue I noticed using RSYNC. So, I filed it here. If needed and people complain, I can move the thread to the Backup section, but I feel it belongs here.
So, the background is that I am just finishing transferring my data from a TS-459 Pro (OS 3.8.2) to a TS-470 Pro (OS 4.0.7). I am working in an environment with several Macs running 10.4.11 and several Macs running 10.6.8. I will be upgrading the Intel Macs some time to 10.8, but not for a year or so at least. So, obviously, switching to SMB2 is not an option for me.
I have transfered all data and noticed that my Finder labels "disappeared" on all files on the TS-470 Pro after using RSYNC to transfer my data over my LAN. The labels are still present on all files on the TS-459 Pro. (The Finder labels are the ability to define a file or folder with a color in the Finder.)
This is no big deal, but I am wondering what other AFP attributes disappear in such a transfer that I have not noticed yet? Has anybody noticed any other issues using RSYNC and AFP? By the way, I think QNAP generally did a good job with AFP starting at about firmware 3.8.2. There are a few small bugs, but otherwise, AFP is working quite well.
Cheers, John

Re: AFP type attributes supported when using RSYNC
Hey,
I just ran into a similar issue. Difference is, we were keeping our Projects on a SMB share before (old Windows machine), assigning OSX labels and colors just worked fine there. If i transfer files now to our new Qnap NAS via rsync, all extended attributes disappear. I tried different versions of rsync and different options (-X, -E, etc.), no chance to preserve them. Tried via smb and afp, no difference either.
The only way is copy files via finder, but that's very unreliable and finder crashed at some point and i had to restart.
@John, did you try these options, maybe they work for you?
Otherwise, who can help? Any tips?
Cheers F

Re: AFP type attributes supported when using RSYNC
Worth a note when it comes to Apple folder and file attributes in general. QNAP has (unless I'm wrong including the current QTS 4.2 Beta) a glitch that AFP and SMB store the attributes in a different way - kind of prohibiting the concurrent use of AFP and SMB from Apple computers.
