afp and time machine not working

Questions about using NAS on Mac OS.

afp and time machine not working

Postby Dewdman42 » Mon May 07, 2012 7:26 am

I just got a new 219pII and already I'm questioning my purchase. Neither Time machine nor AFP seem to work. Let's start with AFP, anyone have some suggestions for how to debug it? I have enabled it with the QNAP web admin page, and on the mac when I browse the network, I see server(afp), however it just reports error when trying to authenticate.

SMB authentication works fine using same credentials.

Time Machine doesn't work either, might be related to AFP.

I a read a lot of reports from prople having problems with Time machine and AFP on QNAP, so now....question is, how can I get this working or should I return the product and get synology?

I have recently purchased a EC1279U-RP and can confirm all works fine.
had a few teething problems with services and performance, this maybe don to a lot of data over 15TB worth and the unit takes a while to read and catalog it all but after a few days it all appears to have settled down and work well.
what OS ore you using on the mac?
have you ensured the firmware is up to date (3.6.1 I think)?
can you log in as the admin user?
what about if you click on the go menu down to connect to server and type afp://(TYPE YOUR IP ADDRESS)
are you cabled or wireless as I have experienced problems when connecting wirelessly with certain routers i.e. netgear in particular with old firmware, try using a wire.
also try creating a new user on your mac log into that user and see if that works?

all the best

I'm on Snow Leopard and yes I made sure to update the firmware to the latest one when I first started up the box.

Yes I tried using the GO menu to specify an afp url. The mac seems to find the volume, but during authentication produces error. The error is not that the password is wrong. It just says error finding volume, consult system adminstrator. Useless error message.

My macbook is wireless, the qnap is wired, into Netgear router. If the QNAP can't function over wireless its useless to me.

I am already starting the ball rolling to exchange this for a ReadyNAS. I found a lot of people on the net complaining about QNAP's flakey AFP and time machine use, and that is certainly my first experience. Meanwhile, I can't find any complainers about the ReadyNAS and OSX. Looks to me like Netgear is paying the right people to make sure it has up to date and supported netatalk software, while QNAP is not.

I love all the software available for the QNAP, its a sweet little box, but I don't have time to deal with this kind of issue and it sounds like a lot of people have been having ongoing mac problems, so I'm out. good luck.

well all works fine for me here with exceptions of a few bugs, less than netgear in which i lost data once and had to wait 2 weeks for netgear to pull there finger out after loosing access to frontview after installing a plug in.
I have just moved from a readynas pro business 6 bay due to bugs lack of decent support for a so called enterprise class unit, performance and constant bugs whenever netgear brings out an update to fix one thing they screw up another.
please bare in mind they do not give you ssh access to your own unit, to do this you will need to download and install the rootssh add on which used to void warranty now just avoids support by netgear.
anyway good luck with your choice.
