Webdav setup issue

Postby jobzesage » Mon Aug 20, 2012 11:19 pm

Hi there,

I'm trying out using Webdav to access a QNAP over the Internet. SMB/VPN was somewhat a little unstable and slow on poor internet connexions. I turned on the Webdav/webserver, I authorised a shared folder to be accessed over webdav by a user, and when I try to connect to the server using command+K on a Mac OS X 10.6.8, I get to accept the certificate (for the secured connexion) and login with my user creditential, but then I get the following message:

Connection failed
There was an error connecting to the server "...". Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.

I tried two different Macs, the other had Mac OS 10.7 I believe, and I tried both on the LAN and over the WAN, same outcome.

I also tried from Cyberduck, and I get:

Error: Not a valid DAV response

I am using the latest firmware: 3.7.3 Build 20120801

Any clue what the issue might be? I feel like I tried everything. Could this be an issue related with the port trunking IEEE 802.3ad?!? (sounds unlikely, but besides that my config is pretty much out of the box, and many people seems to have successfully setup a webdav server and connected with a Mac).

Thanks for your insight!

The Web server on the NAS works and is reachable (ie. the default Web site) from the site you are testing DAV?

Yes it is.

But I just realized something, the folder I used for the testing had a space in its name  I tried an other folder without space an it worked.

Any clue how to write the URL with a space? I tried (assuming folder "hello world"):
Code: Select all
http://192.168.1.2/hello%20world/#
http://192.168.1.2/hello world/#
http://192.168.1.2/hello\ world/#

Any clue how I can reach it?

In Safari, %20 works for sharings open to guests. If it's not enabled for guest, it asks me to login, but then gives me an access forbidden message.

Anyway, what I need is to access from Finder on Mac OS X, not from the browser. But the URL that works with Safari, doesn't work with finder

Well, it looks like it's an issue with the Finder implementation of Webdav:
https://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=14026

I had to create alias sharings (new shared folder, pointing at the existing share's folder) with a name avoiding spaces, using instead the character _. Now it seems to work smoothly.

Annoying... but at least it works ;-)
