[HOWTO] How to create your own dynamic domain on Qnas
[HOWTO] How to Set up DDNS.
Hello

Many people wonder how to create your own domain on the Qnap webserver.
The tutorial from Forum here is broken:http://forum.qnap.com//viewtopic.php?f=63&t=730&start=0
I made a new one, and here is one tutorial for "How I did it".

Maybe this will help you on the run.
Please follow the tutorial step by step to make your server visible on the internet.

  1. First you have to start your webserver. If you dont now how to do this,
    Please se my tutorial here.viewtopic.php?f=32&t=11184
    -
    -
    -
  2. After you have enabled your webserver, go to http://www.dyndns.com to create your own acount.
    -
    dyndns_000.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  3. After you have logged in, go to services, and press Dynamic DNS
    -
    dyndns_001.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  4. Press Add Host services
    -
    dyndns_002.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  5. Now you have to select the domain name you want to have.
I select the domain name "dontexist.com
    -
    dyndns_003.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  6. Then you have to choose the first name of your domain.
I write down "testdomain" as my name this will give me the domain name
    "http://testdomain.dontexist.com"
Then you press "use autodetected ipadress"
    Press "create host"
Tips of domain name = your name.dyndns.com =roger.dyndns.com or something.
    -
    dyndns_004.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  7. If your name is not taken before, you will now come to billing checkout.
The 5 first domainname are free.
    Press "Next" button.
    -
    dyndns_005.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  8. Next window is to activate the domain name.
    Press "Activate services"
    -
    dyndns_006.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  9. Here you see my domain t"estdomain.dontexist.com" is succesfully activated.
If you have all this right it will look the same on your page.
    -
    dyndns_007.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  10. The next thing you have to do is activate the DDNS service on your own webserver.
log in to the administration panel in your webserver.
The adress should be somthing like http://yourserver:8080
Then you go to Network Settings --> DDNS service.
Then you will find this page.
    Press "Enable dynamic DNS service"
Username = your username on your acount on http://www.dyndns.com
Password = your password on your acount on http://www.dyndns.com
Hostname = The domain name you create on http://www.dyndns.com
I fill in my name "testdomain.dontexist.com"
I choose to update my ip every 15 min. Make your own choise here.
    Press "Apply" button.
If everything is correct now, the server will update the adress every 15 min.
    -
    dyndns_008.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  11. You have to add one file in the root of share/Qweb with the name "index.html" or
"index.php" to make it possible to find your site.
You can also add wordpress or something here.
    -
    -
    -
  12. Open your browser. go to adress "http://name.yourdomaine.com"
    I go to "http://testdomain.dontexist.com"
Then the file index.html will open.
    That`s all
    -
    -
    -
  13. Now you have to learn how to create html pages.
    -
    -
    -
  14. If you want subdomains, you have to enable "Create wildcard alias for host"
This you find on the http://www.dyndns.com page
    -
    dyndns_009.jpg

    -
    -
    -
  15. Subdomains is fun if you use virtual host. Se the page about this here.
    viewtopic.php?f=32&t=8207#p54208
This make it possible to create as many subdomain as you want.
If you create subdomains, it sometimes take a while before i works.
This because the DNS servers need to be updated.
30 min to 2 hours or somthing. Be patient.

  16. Please let me know if there are some problems understanding the tutorial.

Have set up a free acount on dyndns but when i use it via "www.the-cloak.com" it does not work, this is the respons

Error retrieving remote page http://www.ocikatt.dyndns.org/
Error type: COULD-NOT-RESOLVE-HOST-IP

Does it take time to update the DNS?

Then i tried with IP and that did not work either

Error retrieving remote page http://82.182.32.47/
Error type: ERROR-OPENING-SOCKET

You should remove the www-part. ocikatt.dyndns.org translates to 82.182.32.47
Then i tried with IP and that did not work either

Error retrieving remote page http://82.182.32.47/
Error type: ERROR-OPENING-SOCKET
This is a completely different problem. Most likely you don't forward tcp port 80 in your router to the Qnap. It's in step 1 of the above tutorial.

Thanks!
You are right, DNS lockup resolvs it now, but it did not work right away.
The other problem is a as you point out another issue. Have already followed the other tutorial, need to check it again.
If I don't resolve it I come back in the other thread.
Thanks for a good tutorial/Hans

Greetings

Looks like a wonderful tutorial. I tried to work through it but I keep running up against all the networking terminology that is making it nearly impossible for me to follow. The shortcoming is not with your tutorial but with my level of understanding. I was wondering if you could recommend something that I could read that would get me up to speed -- up to the point where I could understand what you are suggesting we do.

Thanks.

Talking of the router public IP address or the LAN IP address here?
Does [yourDDNSname].[dyndns.domain] resolve to your route public IP address? Use i.e. # nslookup [yourDDNSname].[dyndns.domain] or # ping [yourDDNSname].[dyndns.domain] ...
Have checked your dyndns account for the last updates, ...?
Doing concurrent updates of your dyndns from the router and the NAS (where the router is undoubted the preferred place)?
