TS-412 changing internal IP's

Postby chemicaldavid » Wed Aug 01, 2012 5:34 pm

Hey, first time having to post here after lurking for a month or so.

I have a wee TS-412 and all seems to ok but I do have this reoccurring problem. I have the NAS downstairs connected with a few other ethernet devices to an unmanaged switch, which in turn is connected to a homeplug. The other end comes out upstairs where its connected to a Virgin Media Superhub. Now for the first while everything has been grand but more and more increasingly my NAS is being given the IP address 169.254.100.100 instead of range assigned by the Superhub of 192.168.0.9. When this happens its very difficult to get back into the NAS again, Finder won't connect as its not on the same network and If I try to change the IP manually then its just reverts to assign automatically (this is in Finders server configuration). From what I've read, 169.254.100.100 is the default address for my NAS. Does anyone know why this happens and if I can prevent it from happening? Im so close to putting it back in its box and returning it at this stage.

Thanks in advance

Dave

It's not being "Given" that IP address.

It's ASSUMING that IP address because your DHCP server (most likely your router) didn't respond to a lease renewal when the DHCP lease expired on the QNAP.

Thanks for the reply Tony. Is there anything I need to check or look at in the Superhubs settings?

You need to configure DHCP Reservation for your NAS within the Superhub. Unfortunately this may be problematic to achieve. I note that a Google search for "superhub router dhcp reservation" returns a lot of results from people having issues with this feature of the SuperHub.

Perhaps you could ask your ISP to provide a better Internet Modem/Router, or preferably just a Modem, so that you can use a quality Router behind it.

Patrick.

Thanks for the reply. I've now stuck the Superhub into modem mode only and attached a D-Link DIR-655 which seems to be working a treat. I had tried to reserve an IP address using the SH but it simply didnt work. I've noticed with the new router that I'm able to enter DynamicDNS settings which I've been after. Thanks for all your help!

Here is a tutorial for DHCP Reservation in a D-Link DIR-655 Router:

Setup D-Link DIR-655 DHCP Reservation From Youtube.com

Hope it helps....
