i had a variation on this theme. it went something like this.

external usb formatted ntfs by a win7 machine
attached it to a qnap, pretty recent firmware (3.5.1 or 3.5.2)
copied 1.5tb files from a raid volume to the usb drive via the shell, all to one folder off the root. .
copied more files.
detached it properly
attached it to another qnap.
could not copy files from it using the shell or the smb share. folder not accessible (similar to symptoms seen on this thread), no files visible in folder.
updated to latest firmware (3.5.2)
no change.
detached the disk and hooked it up to a windows machine.
ran chkdsk/f on it. it found errors (perhaps corruption, i don't recall) in the security descriptors and corrected them.
connected it to the qnap again and i was able to copy the files.
hope this helps someone until qunap fixes it.

Is this issue solved in FW 3.6.0?

Hello,

I haven't specifically tested yet if the issue is fixed or not, I can only say that after the firmware upgrade I attached a NTFS formatted USB disk I had previously attached to the NAS in order to copy some files to it, and the copy speed was awful: after more than 40 minutes, it had yet to finish copying just about 4.5Gb ! Before the upgrade, apart from the permissions issue, the performance was not bad at all, but before saying that something else has been broken, I'll have to make some other tests. During the file copy I noticed that the led on the USB disk blinked rarely, as if the NAS was feeding it data only once in a while, for no apparent reason, because the NAS load average was not high and top showed that most of the CPU time was being used by the cp process. I had suggested to QNAP, as a workaround for the permissions issue, to use by default the other file system driver, which I have read is slower but is not affected by the issue, so I thought that maybe they did this, but then I noticed that the file system driver used is still ufsd.
I think I'll make some tests and then write (complain) again to QNAP.

Regards
Fabrizio

En, make some tests and then write (complain) to QNAP, that will be work.

Sometimes the file permissions on my external USB WD MyBook 1TB, are lost.
Ex: 000

I then enter Web File Manager and give them 777.

Some hours latter those files permissions return to 000 !!!

Is this the problems on this thread?

What is going on ?

My WD My Book is formated in NTFS.

And no QNAP solution for us ? this is a BIG BUG!!!

If after I set 777 on a file, and see it done, why after a few time it reverts ??

This has no sense to me.

This is a big pain for me , because I have multimedia in that external disk, and when I try to read it using my Asus O!Play I get access errors, and if I go and see with web file manager the permissions are reverted!!!

Some times I feel like breaking all this sh*t apart

So ...nothing from QNAP about the fact that this issue hasn't been fixed with the most recent firmware?

Nothing I know about this.

This is a very stupid bug and important one too.

Don't understand why this is not resolved and why so few people are complaining.

I just ran into the same problem last night. :x

I was trying to copy some files from my USB onto the NAS (using the Web File Manager) and I kept on getting permission errors. This never happened to me before. So I looked at the permissions and I noticed they were 000.

Ok, whatever, so I dropped into SSH and did a mass change to 777. Went back to Web File Manager and had the same error! I checked the permissions and they were back to 000!!! :?

This scenario repeated several times! Finally, I just stayed in SSH in the specific folder from which I was trying to copy the file and I kept on re-running the chmod command. I kept on listing the directory for a few minutes and when I saw it didn't change, that's when I figured the permissions now had finally stuck. I went back to Web File Manager and the copy worked.

I didn't have the problem prior to firmware v3.6. Also, my USB was formatted by 32-bit WinXP.

nuspieds, is your USB drive always connected to NAS or you also use it w/ other devices / PCs ?

No, it is not always connected.

It is for my Windows PC. The only time I attach it to my NAS is when I want to copy several Gigs of files to my NAS. Rather than use Windows and the network, I attach the USB drive to the NAS and use the Web File Manager.

Today I even did a telnet to my QNAP and make a manual CHMOD 777 -R in my external usb drive share.

For some time (1 or 2 hours) the permissions stayed like that (777).

But some time after they reverted!!!! This is so stupid!

What is doing this ? Any one knows? Any process running ?
