Block access to subfolder within shared folder?

Postby Snapnaq » Sun Nov 06, 2011 8:20 pm

Not sure where to post this thread or how to search for it. My apologies if this is (in all likelyhood), already addressed elsewhere.

I have granted a user access to specific shares on my QNAP. However, there are folders in that share that I would like to hide (i.e. a folder inside a share). How do I block access to a subfolder within a shared folder? For example, I have a share called "Multimedia". The user has access to this share, but I would like to block access to a subfolder within "Multimedia", called "Audiobooks", without having to block access to the whole "Multimedia" share. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Use Advanced Folder Permissions (aka. ACL support).

Deny acccesss for that user, or for a limited user group. Ensure the ACLs will be deployed to the complete sub-folder structure.

Yes, schumaku has the correct answer.

ACL support (or advanced permissions) is a relatively new feature implemented in the firmware, it adds a lot of flexibility, thanks to QNAP for adding it! :D

I'm curious how it's implemented in the underlying filesystem, but SAMBA metadata files or get/setfacls native UNIX ACLs?

It's implemented by POSIX ACL - so "standard" Linux ACL.

Check out: Share Folders section of the on-line manual

Security settings are toward the bottom of the page.

Good luck.
