ssh danish characters

Postby fanno » Fri Aug 22, 2008 7:09 am

in ssh it will look something like this:
Code: Select all
[/Qmultimedia/Billeder/Foto] # ls
2007-12-24 Jul/           Farmor 90 Ã¥r/            Mogens og Erna/
2008-06-21 Odense/        Fynske Landsby/           Spider/
Airforce 1/               Home/                     Usa/
Bulgarien/                København/               Work/
Erna 60 Ã¥r/              Martin Polderarbent/      Zoo/
Farmor/                   Martin og Metter Bryllup/

Erna 60 år/ ==== Erna 60 Ã¥r/
København/ ==== København/

i could live with doing special codes for æ/ø/å.. like html codes like %number... ???

main problem is i cant do command like(because clients dont seem to allow æøå ( is this client issue ?, why are ssh showing strange characters as æøå ?):

cd Erna\ 60\ år
OR
rm Erna\ 60\ år

if i am not wrong \ is used when space in filename .. ?

again i am sorry if this is a ssh client issue ... but i have tried a few different clients and it seems the same ..

Thanks
Fanno

The default shell does not accept such characters.

Try to use the alternative shell - ash. You can use it by typing 'ash'.

I founded a ssh client that works ( not because the letters are OK ) but because the client can auto complete. a path by starting to type it and then pressing tap! (http://www.putty.org/)

would still be nice if ssh display the characters but ... i can live with this.

But like Helios, i dont have a problem with FTP showing wrong characters.

The problem is the character encoding used in your client.

With PuTTY the characters display fine when you change character encoding to UTF-8, because that's what the NAS uses natively.

With ISO-8859-1 (default in PuTTY)

Code: Select all
-rwxrw-rw-    1 Steve    everyone        4 Aug 25 18:44 København.txt*

With UTF-8:

Code: Select all
-rwxrw-rw-    1 Steve    everyone        4 Aug 25 18:44 København.txt*

In PuTTY, the encoding setting can be found under Window->Translation.

Thats all good, and if you change settings in Putty to UTF-8, it shows caracters correctly. BUT

How do I go about WRITING the caracters in the session? Missing æ Æ, ø Ø and å Å ?

1000 thanks for this tips :-)

UTF-8 did the trick...

Cheers,
