FW 1.1.5 & Harddisk spindown

Discussion about hard drive spin down (standby) feature of NAS.

FW 1.1.5 & Harddisk spindown

Postby rboerdijk » Wed Dec 26, 2007 5:50 pm

According to
http://www.qnap.com/download_detail.asp ... e=Firmware
"Several hard disks are unable to enter standby mode on time, including some Western Digital hard disks." was fixed

Can anyone verify that the spindown is working for one of these?
I'm planning to buy the 209, but I wanna be sure it works correctly first.

- 1000GB Samsung SpinPoint F1 32MB SATA II HD103UJ
- SATA 1TB (1000GB) 7200 16MB Western Digital WD10EACS GP

Thanks everyone!

try this

What's left is the incredibly loud fan that does not seem to vary its speed, but I guess that's another topic.

I can confirm the 750GB version of the Samsung F1 mentioned by you (HD753LJ) does spin down with the latest FW, so I see no reason why the 1TB model shoudn't.

I can confirm that the spindown works fine for the Samsung HD103UJ 1TB with the latest firmware.

HDD Spin Down (HDD Standby) TS-209 Pro Firmware

Postby aka4 » Sat Dec 29, 2007 7:27 am

Confirm.
My disks spins down when timeout is meet.

But it is difficult to see. In the manual it says that light turns blue/ disk lamp turns off. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I see no differences.

There could be a menu point where the disks could be spinned down. Or there could be a shell command?
It is very time consuming to sit and test each idea one by one and wait for timeout.

My config is:
TS-209 Pro, firmware 1.1.5
Disks: 2 x Seagate 7200 RPM, 500GB, SATAII
Raid 1
Services: ALL OFF. (I will open em one by one to see whats happens)

I have TS109 pro with WD Caviar 750 GP:
firmware 1.1.3 spindown took a bit longer (10-30 minutes, not always the same)
yesterday I updated to 1.1.5 and it spins successfully down, always in time.

Services enabled:
fileservice for Microsoft Networking / standalone server
webfile manager
FTP service
download station
webserver
mysql

the NAS is actually also a shared resource (Z) in my pc, so obviously sometimes the hard disk is resumed :)

I cant confirm it, because on my TS-209 the Status LED (i) turn off and the Power LED is steady blue when the HDDs spin down.

Hi,

I can't confirm because i'm not sure the HDD spinoff !!!
can i access to a log where i can see if the HDD turn to waiting mode ?

EDIT : i confirm, my NAS is on and i don't access to it, but the power led is always blue !!! and the status led is always green !!! in documentation the sttus led must to turn off when hdd are in waiting mode ! but i have set time to 15 minutes, no effect !!!! if i would like to always let the QNAP on, i prefer the HDD waiting work !
can you help me to find where is the problem ?

Hi all,

I'm using the 209 PRO with a WD WD10EACS (1TB) but the disk doesn't spin down.

Cheers

Re: FW 1.1.5 & Harddisk spindown

Postby Mantorok » Sat Feb 02, 2008 11:44 am

Hi All,

My hard disk, a Seagate 7200.11 1TB (ST31000340AS), will also not spindown. The STATUS light on my TS-109 will turn off but the drive still spins and the case stays very warm. This has happened with official firmware versions 1.1.4 and the newly released 1.1.5.

The weird thing is that when I first set up the TS-109 (with 1.1.4) it did spin down for the first couple of days. But now it doesn't. It pretty much stopped working after my wife used Picasa2 to look at photos which are stored on the TS-109. Picasa2 had all sorts of problems initially but then it came good...perhaps this was the SMB connection issue (but thats a seperate problem). :?

I've tried disabling all the services except Microsoft Networking which I need. I've also disconnected it from the LAN just in case something was waking it up all the time.

Can anyone suggest a fix for the spin down problem?
