I bought my QNAP from qnap.co.uk with disks installed. qnap.co.uk built the server and configured it. The device arrives with Twonkymedia not running, but with Slimserver running instead. Firmware is v1.1.5.
As configured, the disks do not spin down. I have been testing and made the following findings:
With my USB disk diconnected, and static IP, no DHCP running, and FTP, Slimserver, Web File Manager, Download Manager, Qmultimedia, Slimserver, Web Server, PHP/MySQL, DDNS and all file sharing EXCEPT Windows switched OFF, the disks spin down.
In other words, with only Windows Networking [SMB] and ntp running, the disks spin down. In fact, I couldn't get the unit to wake up again and show its Window shares, I had to browse on port 8080 to get it to come back to life. When it did, then the Windows shared appeared in my client Windows Explorer.
I thought I'd start switching things on sequentially and see what causes the TS-209 to refuse to spindown. So far all I've tried is the Web File Manager. When that is running, the disks just do not spin down.
Testing done connected to a NetGear RP614 router. This is forwarding port 8080 on the WAN side to the TS-209, and port 80 to a Linux server [CentOS].
Sorry if this is a repeat of othere people's findings. But it's clear to me that the Web File Manager running stops the disks from spinning down.
