Why have HDD's stopped spinning down?

Postby nrmsmith » Fri Aug 05, 2011 3:25 am

My QNAP TS-419P was previously set up to serve music to the ipad app (QMobile) via my internal WiFi LAN and it worked just fine. When the QMobile was not running the TS-419P successfully powered down the HDD drives (green HDD activity LED went out).

I have now extended the setup of my TS-419P to allow QMobile to connect via a 3G connection when I am out of town. To do this I followed the MyCloud Setup Wizard, and afterwards it worked first time - I can successfully connect and stream music over a 3G to my iPad when I am away from home.

However, I noticed today that the QNAP has been running 24 hours a day since I made the configurational changes, and apart from the extra power consumption, the box is obviously running a lot hotter. In other words, the HDD drives are no longer spinning down when the QNAP is not being used.

Is this normal & running as designed? Or is there additional configuration I have to / can make in order to allow the box to spin down & save power when not being used?

Thanks

Hi nigell,

Using the automatic router configuration by UPnP is known to prohibit the HDD spin.down. Wait for v3.5 firmwre, or disable the automatic port forward and configure the router manually.
