TS-209 Pro dead?

Postby clasf » Mon May 25, 2009 11:15 pm

Hi,

Yesterday I shutdown my QNAP TS-209 Pro and later when I was going to restart it
there were no response at all on the powerbutton. It seems like it cant get any power
at all, no sounds, no lights just some ticking when I press the powerbutton.

If I take out the discs I can boot but then it aint configured at all. As soon as I
try to boot it with the discs inserted it wont get any power at all.

Anyone that know or have heard about a similar problem? I have reda alot of posts
here today but cant find anything like this.

could be a broken powersupply or one of the disks drawing too much power

hi,

thanks for fast answer. I have tried to boot with just one disc in but the only
way I will get power is with no discs at all. Do You mean that the powersupply can be
broken and just give some power (not full power) and that could be the case?
And if I get my hands on a new psu will the configuration still be usable from
the discs?

the power supply has nothing to do with the data on your disks. so yes your config should be intact.

did you try both disks as the only one connected, to rule out a disk failure?

did you try to boot the nas up without disks and then hotplug both disks? if it still turns off then it really might be the power supply. if it stays running after connecting both disks at the same time it also might be the TS that is broken.

yes i know that the power supply has nothing to do with the data on my discs,
my question was more a concern about the configuration and the powerloss
and if the raidset could be damaged.

yes, i have tried both discs and in different cages.

yes I have tried to boot it up and hotplugged both discs, it remains up then. It is only when
I try to boot with the discs in that it wont get any power.

Thank You for answer,

if hotplugging works than the peak-current at startup probably goes over the limit. But to 100% pinpoint the issue is not simple. Maybe the NAS itself has a higher than normal peakcurrent, or maybe the PSU gives up too fast.

Is it still in warranty? You could contact QNAP support for assistance.

In any case, keep your disks *numbered*, then your raid set will work again when plugged later...

I have now tried a friends powersupply and it started as soon as I pressed the powerbutton.
Now the status-led is blinking all the time, I guess that it's rebuilding or synchronizing the raidset.
It's blinking red/green and the disc-led's are blinking all the time aswell.

log on and look at the log to see what's going on... So it was the power supply after all...

Yes, will do that.

Now the next problem...Earlier today I spoke to the Swedish distributor of QNAP about
powersupplys, they claimed that they did'nt have any spare PSU's. So my question is if I
can buy any switching powersupply with the same spec's as the DVE one that came with my 209.
The DVE is $18.50 in US but shipping to Sweden is almost $50. I can find a similar one
in Sweden for almost half the price.

if the plug has the same polarity and size and the powersupply supplys the same Voltage and at least the same amount of currrent (or more) then you can use it.

but i am not sure what QNAP says about it in case you have a RMA request. but i think you should be fine.
you can contact QNAP anyway to get a replacement power supply.

did you plug in your disks in the same order as before? i mean is disk1 connecterd as disk1, there might be problems if you swithced them.

I will try to get an "original" PSU today and if I dont get any luck I will buy another one
temporary.

Yes, I plugged them into the cages in the same order as before.

Thanks for all the help!

I have this same problem today! I couldnt access my nas, so I went to look at it. I heard a whirring up and down on the ts-209, and disk 2 light was flashing, so I shut it down, thinking the disk was bad. When I tried to restart, nothing but little clicks when I hit the power button. I tried pulling drive #2 then both drives and still clicking, but the nas didnt turn on. I put a multimeter to the power supply terminals and it reads 12.24 volts, but perhaps it cant deal with a current draw.

Has anyone else solved this problem, and does anyone know if my mirrored data will be recoverable, should I need an entire new unit?!

Can I just get a 12V power supply from radioshack?

Typical on the same day.

I have exactly the same problem as Subw00er. My unit was produced in september 2007 (warranty label on the back)

Hi,

Mine is a TS-209 and I had the same problem during the summer this year. The NAS wouldn't boot after I have had shutdown for about 3 weeks when being avay on holiday. I heard the same clicking sound you are talking about. I managed to make it boot without disks and then hotplugged the disks followed by a reboot. This restored everything back to normal ;-)

Now, 2 to 3 days ago, it stopped responding and I had to turn it off... Now, I can't boot it again - still the same low noise clicking sound, even without disks.

I'm gonna try out a new PSU like described here - I think that is the right solution.
