Questions about using Windows AD service.

I just want to say, don't be asses, this is happening on other NASes. Really... do a google on "Windows 7 NAS" and you will get a ton of hits from all manufacturers. What I can add to the discussion is that my colleague has a near identical setup as me (next room over), except his PC is an HP while mine is a Dell. We both have the same windows 7 64 bit edition, going to the same QNAP... and his works flawlessly. Mine works via IP only. I'm going to try the DNS "fake" A Record trick, which will suit my purposes.

I don't believe this is simply a windows 7 issue - I can reproduce it on clients running Win7, Vista and Server 2008. It doesn't seem to be an issue for me from an XP client, or linux and OSX clients.

Here's hoping a fix is coming sometime soon...

I've just updated to the recently released firmware -3.2.4 Build 0315, and I notice that this issue is still unresolved; ie. domain user access works via IP or netbios / dns aliases but not via the actual hostname.

Is there a fix in progress for this problem?

I have similar issue as well, except if I am using WinXP client, I can access the sharefolder via hostname with no problem (apply NTLMv2 via GPO).
WinSer2K8(R2), Win7 & WinVista only able to access via IP address.
Hope this will help you with the investigation.

Cheers,

Ed.

Same Problem here:
TS-439, Server 2008 R2 Domain, Windows 7 Clients

If I traý to access shares by hostname or FQDN I get the error 'There are no logon servers available'. If I try to access by IP, only the built in Qnap Admin user can access shares. NSLOOKUP FQDN, Hostname, IP works flawlessly.

The TS can access all domain dontrollers without problems, I can add domain users and groups and also time sync with my domain controller is working.

Dear Florian,

It's look like your problem is a different problem: in your case, you cannot use domain user at all.
Which firmware do you have ? and what version of windows is your domain controller ?

do you have any error message in the NAS log ?
For example, in connection log, do you have any error message ?

Hi Jauss,

thanks for your reply. Current firmware version: 3.2.6 Build 0423T The domain controllers are running on Server 2008 R2, domain level: Server 2008 R2.

There are no errors in the logs.

Cheers,

Dear Florian,

This error message would be related to WINS resolution.
Are you using WINS in your domain ? If yes, don't forget to setup the WINS server IP address on the NAS, and on the clients.
If not, i think the best is to check with technical support. They can connect remotely and verify the settings.

Can you access the NAS share folder from the domain controller ?

Hi all,
Recently I have restored to default factory settings with latest 3.2.6 firmware and it fixed the access via hostname issue in windows 2008 R2 domain.
I am rely solely on DNS without WINS.
hope this information will help you.

By default Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 and Vista no longer use Wins. In order to get working what you want use the following format:

\\server_name.domain_name.local\share_name

So, if you want to map a share to a drive you type:

net use drive: \\server_name.domain_name.local\share_name

Is anyone else having this problem still?

I have just put into use a qnap 409U which hasnt been used for a while
I have updated to firmware 3.3.0 build 0924T

When I try and connect by using \\name I get error 0x80070043

I have tried the previous suggestion of adding an alias but this has not helped either.

when I connect by IP address I get the same error.

The domain is Windows 2008 R2

I notice that a DNS record does not get created either when I add it to the domain and I have created the A record manually.

I am Having a Similar issue with the TS-439 Pro II+ (3.3.6 Build 1110T). I have a 2008 Standard SP1 server (non r2) that has a Backup Exec Job pointed to the eSATA Share 1 and 2 by name (\\QNAP\eSATADisk1). Lately i've found I have had issues with the backups finishing/dropping. After some troubleshooting I found I could no longer connect by name, but could still reach the share via IP (\\192.168.0.70\eSATADisk1).

When I looked at the Qnap I found I did still show the check for Read/Write Permission for both the Domain Admin Group and the Domain Admin user tied to the backup account. On a whim I decided to hit "apply" on the screen without changing anything, and suddenly, I was able to access the share by name once again. While this patch works in the short term the issue still seems to keep happening. The only other things i have on this QNAP are 2 iSCSI targets, 1 actively used (which also gives me problems, but i will post about that elsewhere). Otherwise I have all the services I'm not using turned off.

This is very frustrating since we depend on the device to consistently handle a backup job and it seems to fail sporadically.
