How long does it take to format a 2 TB drive?

Postby caveprod » Fri Dec 10, 2010 6:52 am

I bought a pair of 2 TB Hitachi drives to complete my array in a 439 pro II, I dont remember the 1st two taking long to format, however I've restarted the process a couple of times now, how does 14 hours for zero percent progress on both of them sound? I've tried "checking" them, they get ok's but they are just sitting there apparently doing nothing.

pulled the original 2 drives, put the new drives in the first two bays, formatted ok. Then replaced the first two, in pos 1&2 and put new disks in 3&4

apparent success.

about 5 min format

beats 24 hours for zero.

migrated to a raid 5 array. Same deal, got to 50% quickly then stopped. processor back to normal, 17 hours passed, still migrating, restarted anyway, against manuals instructions, all seems ok. Nothing else was happening. Hope all is ok. Dont know if its the disks, the software or a hardware problem. Anyway, hoping all will progress from here OK, had most data backed up, hard to do totally with a 6 TB array.

Has anyone ever seen this stuff before?
