Stream music from iTunes server to iPhone

Postby nickepe » Wed Apr 13, 2011 4:51 pm

Hi,
I am thinking of buying a 219+.
Today my homeshared library from my computer show up in iPod app and I play it directly in my iPhone/iPad.
My question is: Can I do the same with iTunes server on QNAP, e.g. play my music directly from the QNAP in iPhone's iPod app, so I can see the lyrics, coverart etc.?
I really would like to turn my PC off once and for all...

Best regards, Nickepe

For streaming to your iPhone/iPad you can use Qmobile (Qnap's app for streaming media from your Nas) viewtopic.php?f=201&t=42680 There are some restrictions (format) which can be found in the topic I mentioned.

Now I use the iTunes server to stream to my Marantz (airport express) using the remote app, a nice how to is here viewtopic.php?f=177&t=37472 so no need to turn on your PC :D

The solution to the most difficult "problem" is usually very simple.

Thanks for your reply!
What I really wanted was not to use another app than the original iPod app.
If QNAP's sharing show up in iTunes maybe it can show up in idevices with iOS 4.3?

Someone from QNAP maybe know if this is coming?

From researching a lot about this, it doesnt seem like you can currently use the iPod App to stream directly from the QNAP. Only the QNAP mobile app seems to, which is to basic for my liking! Its the limitation of iTunes and the iPod app thats the problem though i think.

This is one of the more frustrating aspects of iTunes and iDevices, to me. We can stream music from a desktop computer to any other computer on the network. We can stream music to wireless speakers, and we can stream from networked drives. But somehow, iPhones and iPads aren't capable of doing this. It seems like this would be a no brainer on a portable device with limited harddrive space. Instead, Apple only allows you to use the devices as a remote.

One of many things that has started to bother me about my iPad and iPhone

@fionasara, couldn't have put it better myself.

Since being all for apple stuff about 3 years ago, I have come to absolutely despise Apple and everything with an "i" in front of it. They want you to use the stuff that you've bought in their way, and their way only.

I am currently trying to figure out a way of streaming music stored on my NAS to my girlfriend's iPhone, and it would appear that it cannot be done through iTunes. Instead, I've got to look for third party apps to do this, and all of those require iOS 4.2 or later. Her iPhone is iOS v.3.

So basically, it cannot be done. My solution is to recommend she replaces her iPhone with an Android.

I would therefore recommend the following set up for anyone:

Keep iTunes on your desktop computer (Mac or PC)
Store your music on that computer's hard drive
Set up a sync (using something like SyncToy) to "back up" your iTunes library to the Multimedia\Music folder of your NAS
Get Twonky Server up and running on your NAS and stream to your other devices from that.

I am not following my own advice. At present, I am storing my iTunes library on the NAS. This effectively means that there is no local copy of the music on my Mac Pro. OK, it saves me having to store 300GB of music; but what's a 500GB HDD these days... about £50?
