QNAP FTP client...yet another request!

Postby NVStelmach » Wed Oct 27, 2010 10:48 pm

Hi,

I've been the proud owner of a Qnap 409 turbostation pro for about 4 years now and I still love it for what it's suppose to do in my home...

However I have one major feature missing since I first started following the developement 4 years ago, and that's an sFTP client with a gui...

Why? -Well I have seen this question plus redicule for the few who have dared to ask over the years, so let me once and for all explain why:

When I bought the 409 times where different...a lot of people (privates) bought the 409 to have a NAS with torrent download =headless, silent and low on power consump. the 409 was perfect (almost) for that out of the box....

But, these days the majority of torrents have moved to private trackers mainly due to one of the largest public trackers being banned around the world. -The private trackers and the seriousness of being a fast reliable uploader has created a new blooming business = Seedboxes.......for those who don't know do a google and you will be amazed at the $ turnover this industry is now creating.

A seedbox could simply be explained as a remote server out in the world where all your torrent up/download goes on on very fast DSL lines....but you still need to move files between your NAS and your seedbox server.......so you no longer have any use for the bittorrent software on your Qnap but you do require a fast secure client with transfer access between your seedbox and your NAS = sFTP client with GUI.

The workaround today is as previous posters have mentioned = power hungry PCs/laptops acting only as middlemen in FTP transactions between NAS and seedbox...it's stupid, wastefull and completely redundant.

It's not a difficult task and it could be QPKG net2client or another web based or even non-web based client...even integration into the new filemanager or download station...I don't care how and what the solution as long as the goal of sFTP client through a GUI is met.

Btw. this is my very first post/request as I have always found all I need on this forum on other NAS/Linux/Debian/ipkg forums.

Thanks.

Same here,

I cannot believe something as simple as an FTP Client (like Filezilla) does not exist for the Qnaps!

I am using QNAP 439 Pro, 559 Pro and 559 Pro +, I would love to see this UI features apps as well..(similar to cuteFTP client, FileZilla Client.. which makes life more easy

so I can manage and initiate the upload and download from my QNAP machine (per files and per folder basis..)

I don't want to manage to write linux scripts :(

Hi eldonli,
Firmware 3.4 & 3.5 introudced RTRR, which allows you to download and upload files to an FTP server.
http://docs.qnap.com/nas/en/index.html? ... cation.htm
may I know if this meets your requirement?

sftp or ftps? that's something very different :-)
there are some FTP clients available through ipkg, don't they satisfy you?

Any updates on this? I think NVS hit the nail on the head with what the trend in the downloading community is nowadays. I would love to have a ftp client built in that can do SSL transfers over a specified port. AND QNAPJASON, I think the software you suggested is great and a total testament to the commitment QNAP has shown the community, BUT it is limited.

For example I may just want to download something off my seedbox once, and then move it to another folder (for example, mp3s that are then moved to my qmedia folder so they can run through the itunes server). If I were to move it, it would just download again creating a redundancy. And in my seedbox I may have something seeding really well that I just don't use (since it was burned to disc) thus I would simply want to erase it off my nas.

Thus an ftp client with a webgui would be the most optimal, allowing me the control that I want.

I believe QNAP's nas are hands down the most versatile and well supported and this has made me a loyal customer. It's a great company with great customer service. Whenever qnap introduces a consumer nas that uses uefi/efi instead of bios I will be (finally) upgrading from my 209. Until then I want some support and a proper gui ftp client.

Why don't you simply install the net2ftp on a virtual directory in the Apache Web server?

Any links on how to do it? Did a few searches and didn't really find a clear cut way to set it up. Are there any limitations that you currently experience with this?

BUMP BUMP!

Just wondering if this ever eventuated? I'm too in this situation and want to remove the PC from the entire loop...QNAP based sFTP client would be a very nice additional to the next firmware upgrade.

It's quite simple...

NET2FTP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Download here

In a few words:

1 - Unzip all the files on your computer, and upload them to your web server.

Example: 'Share/Web/net2ftp'

2 - The /temp directory should be chmodded to 777.

3 - Set your settings in the settings.inc.php file.

4 - A database is only required if you want to log the actions of the users, or
if you want to enable the daily consumption limit. To create the tables,
execute the SQL queries in the "create_tables.sql" file. This can be done
easily in PhpMyAdmin, the popular front-end to MySQL.

Enjoy!

More instructions HERE

Mine it's working...

just one more thing... if you need to create a database use this query instead

Code: Select all

I had installed the net2ftp without any issues but when access to the seedbox and try to transfer to the NAS FTP I got the following error:

The error occured in file /share/MD0_DATA/Web/net2ftp/includes/filesystem.inc.php on line 124.

function ftp_openconnection2 (/share/MD0_DATA/Web/net2ftp/modules/copymovedelete/copymovedelete.inc.php on line 248)
function net2ftp_module_printBody (/share/MD0_DATA/Web/net2ftp/main.inc.php on line 313)
function net2ftp (/share/MD0_DATA/Web/net2ftp/index.php on line 61)
argument 0: printBody

I do not have clue what is wrong the ftp user and password are correct and working.

Have you checked permissions of "/share/MD0_DATA/Web/net2ftp/" sub folders?

Do you get this error on every king of files or uploading to any folder using the 3 upload options?
