What wakes up my TS-212 periodically?

Discussion about hard drive spin down (standby) feature of NAS.

What wakes up my TS-212 periodically?

Postby jamieburchell » Sun Jun 12, 2011 5:28 am

My TS-212 periodically wakes up one of the hard drives, but I can't work out why. I've checked the connection log (HTTP, FTP, Telnet, SSH, AFP, SAMBA and iSCSI) and also the Apache access logs. Neither give any indication that anything happened when the NAS woke up.

FW version: 3.4.3 Build 0520T (2 standalone Samsung drives)
The Web File Manager and Multimedia Station are the only features that are active.
Windows Networking and FTP are active.
Optware packaged is installed.

I'm assuming it must be an internal process or daemon, how would I check? Is this normal?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the link, I'll take a look at that script.

The drives always spin down properly though, it's just something wakes one of them up every now and then. I'd have to presumably keep this script running all the time on the offchance it happens again?

Hi,
Notice the same thing with my TS-110,on stand-by,something wakes up my Seagate Barracuda Green 2 TB 7 - 8 times a day. :(
Have you found a solution :?:

Greetings.

Never found out. It still wakes up every now and then. I turned on logging for all connection types but the logs don't show any activity around the time the drives wake up. Perhaps it's when it updates the time, or if there's an attempted FTP login - who knows?

Found out when disable the automatically time setting to the internet "pool server" and set it manual, i have a few unwanted spin-ups less.(4 - 5 a day)
Also saw that the spin-ups are almost exactly on the same hour every day.

EDIT- everything still the same...7 - 8 spin ups a day...

Greetings.

Yeah I was seeing this aswell with it seeming to start up again every 45-50 minutes from standby and like the op above I had checked all connections. For some reason now though it won't spin down but I will look at the script above try figure that out.

Looks like the latest firmware has started the spin down again but I am still seeing the periodic wake up and i have disabled the pool server and set it to manual.

Do you use Auto Router Configuration? In my case that was the cause of not spinning down.
Best regards

Just an observation, one of the times my TS-212 spins up is at 11:00am GMT every day.

Hi,

Found this on the Qnap wiki.....http://www.claus-henning.thecappells.net...D_SpinDown

After performing this script on the Qnap, using putty, (i disable everything at crontab) the HDD won't spin down at all (firmware Qnap 3.6.0.)On advice from Briain(Linn forum) i loaded the latest firmware (3.6.1) and tried again, now the Disc spins down nicely, and the spin-ups are limited to 2(from 7) now,and all spin-ups happens at night. But,there must be more background activity going on that is not visible at crontab.Sadly enough, the modifications on the script are gone in the morning (rebooting?),so i have to perform the modification everyday over and over again. There must be a way to save the changes to the script, but how??...anybody who's familiar with this?
I found this solution, but it did not work.

http://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Add_items_to_crontab

1. Edit /etc/config/crontab and add your custom entry.
2. Run 'crontab /etc/config/crontab' to load the changes.
3. Restart cron, i.e. '/etc/init.d/crond.sh restart'

I always get the message "permission denied"
I tried the restart command alone, but no luck.

Thanks in advance....

Please provide the full path - the URL referenced is broken.

Removing simply all crontab scheduled entries is silly - it brings the NAS into operational risk, does prohibit updating thumbnails of images for reasonable fast. Each and every entry has it's purpose. Soem administrative tasks like scheduling SMART shsort and long tests does add more entries.

When reading one or the other post here, I can't get rid of the impression, that HDD spindown is priority one - instead of having a reliable working NAS, getting the most benefit out of it.

If you seek a NAS with disks not running at night - shut it down completely.

Sorry for the broken link....

Fair point you make about having a reliable working nas.But is this normal behaviour that the HDD spins up at certain periods when stand-by has enabled?
