Hi guys,

Had a read of this thread and there does not seem to be a solution yet?

My TS419P+ with 4xSeagate ST2000DL003-9VT1CC32 (2TB Drives) just started having this issue "Disk Read/Write Error" on Drive 3. SMART Scan's all report good status.

I have only SAMBA, AFP, TimeMachine services running.

QNAP Support/Rest, any ideas? it doesn't look like the HDD is the problem from what I've read (otherwise I would go out and buy a replacement drive). In the meantime, what's the solution?

I have exactly the same problem with my TS-419P II (FW 3.5.1 Build 1002T) and 4 x Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT1CC3C (RAID-5).
"Disk Read/Write Error" on Drive 1. SMART status on all drives is "GOOD".

HDD and/or NAS problem?

spent sometime on Skype chatting to QNAP online support. Very helpful and responsive.

they got me to send them some log files and R&D looked at it as well. They told me the HDD is most likely fine and they hope to have this fixed in the next firmware release (they hope to close it in 3.5.2). No commitment on release time-frames yet though.

so in the meantime, I won't be replacing my HDD (just as well as there's a global HDD shortage due to the flooding in Thailand). the same HDD I have has doubled in price since I bought it in May!!! crazy!)

After disabling the hard disk standby mode my combination of TS-419P II (FW 3.5.1 Build 1002T) and 4 x Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT1CC3C (RAID-5) doesn't show the "Disk Read/Write Error" anymore. The system is stable for 3 days now.

May be this could be a workaround.

Same problem showed its head here last night.

TS-419PII, latest firmware
4x Hitachi HDS5C3020ALA632ML6O (2TB)
RAID5
All brand new, less than 1 month old

I was able to get the drive (drive 2, FWIW) back to "OK" status, but the RAID won't start rebuilding.

Any ideas on how to trigger a rebuild?

Edit:I should add that the "rebuild" button one the web interface's "RAID Management" page is disabled, and following the directions to replace a drive did not trigger the automatic rebuild, as it seems it should have.

Hey mklengel, might try that. Is it still working ok? does it just mean the system now consumes more power as it doesn't go into standby.

Sorry to reply to myself, but given today's XKCD (http://xkcd.com/979/), I figured it was only appropriate to do so...

I triggered a Bad Blocks Scan on the drive that dropped and was re-added via the "Volume Management" page. After the scan completed (7hrs on a 2TB drive) and showed no errors, drive 2 was re-added to the RAID set and the rebuild started, according to the log page. It's at 6% now, so I'll just keep an eye on things...

Edit:
Failed again. Drive dropped out of RAID set while being rebuilt. Not cool, QNAP...

One reader asked about my workaround to disable the hard disk standby mode:

"After disabling the hard disk standby mode my combination of TS-419P II (FW 3.5.1 Build 1002T) and 4 x Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT1CC3C (RAID-5) doesn't show the "Disk Read/Write Error" anymore."

The system is stable for 9 days now...

I too have this error on my Disk 2 in a QNAP 419p+.

Do we have any confirmation on what causes this error? Is the drive completely out of the raid? Do I just sit around waiting for another drive to fail and I lose all my data? What's the story QNAP tech support?

I'm extremely concerned / frustrated.

I believe the Read/Write Error is gone now with disabling the hard disk standby mode. It works without problems since 24 days.
