TS-879 Pro RAM Upgrade options ?

Postby qn00b » Fri Jan 06, 2012 10:15 am

Hello,

I am thinking of expanding my QNAP family, again, by adding a TS-879 Pro.
Factory RAM is 2GB, but I cannot locate any information about RAM upgrade options.

How many RAM slots does this unit have ?
How is the factory installed RAM configured ... 1 x 2GB module or 2 x 1GB module ?
What is maximum RAM capacity of this QNAP model based on CPU of Core i3 ?

Many thanks for the information if you can provide answers.

Regards,
qn00b

hi qn00b,
On TS-879 Pro:
How many RAM slots does this unit have ?

2 RAM slots

How is the factory installed RAM configured ... 1 x 2GB module or 2 x 1GB module ?

1x 2GB DDR3

What is maximum RAM capacity of this QNAP model based on CPU of Core i3 ?

We've tested up to 16GB of RAM (8+8GB, & 8+2GB combination)

Sounds good but does this break the guarantee? The moment this isnt talked about on the product page thats what I assume. Only the 879U-RP page says it can be done and the x59 Pro II's show this too, not indicating this on the desktop models of the x79 got me really scared.

Not displaying on the qnap webpage that you are allowing memory upgrades on the desktop models of the x79 is a bad move and costing you sales. I advise updating the page if you officially allow the upgrade.

No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Indeed, I had read the warranty but its ambiguous as it must be. Some shops allow you to break their seal to upgrade and other try claim a voided warranty when done. Is the warranty label the seal? Pretty sure I saw one on my 439

Qnap is telling you that you may self upgrade the ram on some of their models which doesnt include the desktop version of the TS-879, the moment an employ tells me I can do that on the 879 I know nothing is voided, especially in Switzerland.

QNAPJason already said it can be upgraded to 16Gb which will include clipping off their cable binder on the single ram stick fitted ;) Which person would buy this machine not knowing that it can be upgraded.

It is the reseller that is responsible towards the customer (not Qnap) and any decent reseller worth receiving your money will inform you about your rights, at least on inquiry and especially if they have the opportunity to also sell you memory and disks. Make sure you get it in writing, an email is probably enough. All this of course excludes all the resellers competing only with price and that may have disappeared the next month.

My reseller is sending my back here saying unless stated by qnap they are not promising me anything. The models qnap states that can be upgraded are obvious, this unupdated page is obvious http://www.qnap.com/faq_detail.asp?faq_id=645. Though Schumaku does say in a 2009 post; "Warranty void concerns are completely B.S. - these "warranty void" labels are null and void and have zero legal value, in the EU, in Switzerland ... "

QNAPJason wrote:

1x 2GB DDR3

Pretty sure I see 2x1gb sticks in the 1079 http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/cache/multithumb_thumbs/b_551_0_16777215_0___images_stories_nas_qnap_ts1079pro_qnap_ts1079pro_inside_detail.jpg Tie binders suggesting they dont want you to upgrade so its not just sticking an extra module into an empty space.

If qnap says no-upgrade then this is a real deal breaker... I want processing power but an i3 with 2gb is no use, I mean thecus is bringing theirs out with 4gb but who'd want one of those....

Thanks,
Simon.

This may be a stupid question, but what is the specification for the RAM I would need for my 879?

Is it the same as the RU - 240 Pin DDR3 ECC??

Thanks in advance.

Can anyone confirm they have upgraded the TS 879 Pro desktop RAM past the installed 2GB? Did you use the spec from JohnECB?

Hi clockhouse,
We have tested up to 16GB of desktop RAM in the TS-x79 series (8GB x 2) in the lab.
Please note that QNAP only provide support when using the QNAP standard RAM modules.

Hi Jason

Can you be specific and state that you've been able to install extra RAM into the TS-879 Pro desktop version. This is the one that we would like to buy and not the rack version.

Also are you saying that the QNAP standard RAM modules are any that are qualified for the a TS-879U-RP and that is:

Type DRAM
Technology DDR3 SDRAM
Form Factor DIMM 240-pin
Memory Speed 1333 MHz ( PC3-10600 )
Latency Timings CL9
Data Integrity Check ECC
RAM Features Dual rank , registered
Compatible Slots 1 x memory - DIMM 240-pin

Many thanks,
Drew.

I put two of these in my TS-879 pro. Now I just need to figure out what to do with all the extra memory...
