What do you want to say? According to MySQL.com, the following versions are the actual General Availability builds:

MySQL Community Server 5.5 (5.5.22 GA)
MySQL Community Server 5.1 (5.1.62 GA)
MySQL Community Server 5.0 (5.0.96 GA)

So (without further investigation) there might be good reasons to push to 5.1.62 quickly. which is a maintenance release. Is the rush to v5.5 mandatory on a short term?

Well actually yes - I can't run the newest Vbulletin 5.0 because Qnap are dragging their heels - any attempt i have made to upgrade manually gets blocked and I am told that there is no disk space... bit weird. Would really appreciate the Mysql database to be upgraded soon.

Afraid that running vB on your QNAP does not count as a good reason to upgrade to 5.5. Also, per their reqs list:

For vBulletin 5 Connect:
Minimum Requirements: vBulletin is designed to run on every server that has PHP 5.3 or greater and MySQL 5.1.5 or greater installed. You must also have mod_rewrite, URL Rewrite or equivalent and you must upload the included .htaccess to your server.

On a generic note: we are @ 5.1.66 for the 5.1 branch. Plus, given the Oracle politics wrt MySQL lately, QNAP should strongly consider switching to a compatible replacement, such as MariaDB.
QNAP, why is your homework still not done?
3.8.2 Build0301 - Codename "Titanic" - Dear customer, GTFO! NOT acceptable once again!
QTS 4.0 - Codename "Leaky Snail" - Slower than ever. Yes, we can!

Last but not least - talking of a TS-112 with 2156 MB memory ... are you convinced you need all these resource challenging applications on such a small NAS?

Rather than fighting to put vBulletin 5.0 Beta on your QNAP, and paying for a Licence to use it, wouldn't it just be easier to install phpBB3 Forums software instead? phpBB3 has more favourable licencing (it's free), and it can be easily installed on your NAS by simply following the instructions in QNAP Tutorial: How to Use PHP & MySQL to Create a Forum in Your Turbo Station

phpBB3 includes support for BBCode, just like vBulletin does, but will work with your pre-existing MySQL and PHP implementations on your NAS. I have no idea how well it would work with a TS-112 with its limited CPU (Marvell 6281 1.2GHz) and limited RAM (256MB DDRII RAM) but you could easily find out by simply installing it and trying it.

If licencing and running vBulletin 5.0 Beta is important to you, perhaps putting it on a Linux-based PC would be less challenging for you.
