Cannot access NAS data via network

Postby waringt » Fri Jan 20, 2012 2:03 pm

Hi all,

I purchased a TS-212 for myself after implementing a few for some of our clients, but am having trouble with it on my own network. When I got it, I set it up, went through the initial setup, but did not create a RAID array, because 1 of the disks was not showing up, and after the reboot started making a scraping noise. So I RMA'd the drive, and about 3 months later now, I have a new working drive.

I setup the disks using RAID 1, and everything looks right, but I cannot access any of the shares. I can go to 192.168.1.5:8080 and get the main admin section, and it shows up the Twonky media server (although my test mp3s dont show up, but since I can only access files via web file manager, I havent looked further into it) but doesnt show up at all in the Network section of Explorer.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to repair this. it is relatively useless without Explorer access. I have also tried accessing it via a Mac (Hackintosh), and it doesn't show up to it either.

Thanks,
Tim

May be a dumb question, but did you fully configure the Microsoft File Sharing section?

Yes, it is setup and enabled. It has Local Master Browser enabled only.

Can you MANUALLY map to the drives?

If not, then I wonder if the SMB process is running on the QNAP. You can check via SSH for that.

No, I cannot manually map the drives. How do I check that SMB is running? I know how to use SSH to get to a Linux command line.

on the command line, issue:

ps aux | grep smb

You should see one or more "smbd" lines.

[~] # ps aux | grep smb
13095 admin 1588 S /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd -l /var/log -D -s /etc/con
28378 admin 568 S grep smb

Yes, I see that smbd should be running.

[~] # ps aux | grep smb
5053 admin 568 S grep smb
31496 admin 5112 S /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd -l /var/log -D -s /etc/con
31501 admin 3228 S /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd -l /var/log -D -s /etc/con

Checked the NAS system logs already? Potentially enabled to much security, and your test system IP address might be blocked?

There is no security at all on the NAS. So the IP address is not blocked. I have also tried from multiple different clients, and still no luck.

EDIT: Just tried on a PC that is attached via cable to the router (all ones before had been via wifi) and it has no issues accessing the NAS via SMB. So it must be something to do with the Router.

If its the wifi router, it might have the setting enabled that prevents other users being on the same network from accessing network resources? (Can't remember the name, sorry). This feature is supposed to prevent wireless clients from 'attacking' each other or resources on the lan while still being able to share the internet.

These were to different features. One is Wirelesss Client Isolation, proibiting direct contact between two WLAN clients (thats not the one stoping you here); the other is that some routers can limit bridging the WLAN to the switched LAN, only allowing Internet access. This feature must be disabled if you want to reach the NAS (on the LAN) from your WLAN.

looks like i never came back and said that i had sorted it out. It was a default setting on my Draytek router that blocks NetBIOS traffic. Allowing the Netbios traffic through now allows me to access the NAS. the only issue now is that it ynlt transfers at 2MB/s, even though I am on an N network that reports that it is able to do the full spec, not limited to G speeds... but that is another thing I am trying to sort out with Draytek.
