How to get started under linux?

Postby mbeeby » Mon Jan 23, 2012 7:55 am

Hi,

I just purchased a Qnap TurboNAS TS-412 for me linux setup (Mint 11).

I was hoping for a basic 'getting started' guide, but all the Quick Installation Guide tells me to do is connect the unit to my PC via an ethernet cable and steer to 169.254.100.100:8080, which doesn't work...

Is there a startup guide out there that I've overlooked, or do I need to roll up my sleeves to learn about setting subnet addresses and figure this out on my own?

Thanks.

I just realised there isn't actually a 'QNAP Finder' prog for Linux... I set mine up with it connected via a GB switch, let the router's DHCP give it whatever ip it felt like and went from there. The ip you quote is the correct default though.

Another quick way is to let your router give a DHCP address to the QNAP and then from your linux box do nmap on your subnet. It's a bit overkill, but in a few seconds you've found your QNAP.

...or simply check the DHCP server log or association table for the NAS MAC address and the pointer to the IP addres assigned.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the quick responses! This is definitely all pointing me in the right direction. After a couple of hours of intense googling, however, I'm still struggling. Could someone point out the place to find my DHCP server log or identify the QNAP IP after the router assigned it? I tried an nmap on my subnet but don't see anything that fits the description of my TS-412...

Thanks

Can you access your router via its web GUI?

@mbeeby,

See response from @Crush. In any case, as long as the QNAP is up and your DHCP server (router?) is working, nmap should find a computer (IP address) providing *at least* an http server (port 80).

Hi guys,

Sorry for the delay replying -- been really busy, and upgraded my computer.

I'm on a work network, so no router. Running nmap shows a list of computers, but none have a name that looks like my QNAP TS-412. What should I see if it's successfully been assigned an IP address?

Is there any documentation or quickstart guide out there? Trawling the QNAP website, and google searches, don't bring up anything...

Thanks!

If you are permitted to connect a NAS to the work network, ask the network/DNS/DHCP manager. Otherwise there might be some tricks deployed to the switch layer to protect the network from connecting unauthorized devices, put tem into an isolation VLAN space, put legal devices not connecting the correct way into a bootstrap and installation VLAN, ... and you are never able to discover it.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the tips. I'm afraid my knowledge of network setup is minimal, so I've emailed our sysadmin...

In the meantime, I tried plugging in via eSATA, but don't see anything under dmesg. Again -- any pointers as to how to troubleshoot this? Sorry for the out-of-my-depth questions, but I'm pretty lost here without much to go on...

Thanks,

What exactly are you try to connect together here by eSATA?

Please be aware, A NAS is not direct-attached-storage you can connect like a USB or eSATA disk enclosure to another computer.

I just completed the setup of my 419P+ on a Linux Mint 11. To get going, I first connected the server directly to the Linux machine. To make the connection work, I clicked the network manager -> Edit Connections -> Auto eth0 -> Edit -> IPv4 Settings -> Method: Link-Local Only. Then I disconnected and connected the wired network, and browsed to 169.254.100.100:8080.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies.

schumaku, thanks for pointing this out. Although I was aware that the intended use for a QNAP device is over a network, I reasoned that the eSATA port on the back of the device might be a way to directly connect the device to my machine. I guess that's a no-go.

semi, interesting to read your experience. I followed your description of what you did, but consistently received "Problem loading page" in my browser when looking at 169.254.100.100:8080 after setting the method to Link-Local Only, either with the QNAP directly plugged into my computer, or alternatively I also tried (as before) on the network. Any idea what the problem might be?

Thanks for your time, guys...

mbeeby, if the TS-412 has two network connectors, did you try both of them?
