Vista explorer hangs accessing Samba Shares

Postby bvanbeusichem » Wed Sep 26, 2007 5:34 am

Today my daughter got her new laptop with Vista preinstalled.
When I want to connect to my TS-109 samba shares this works.
But hopping around in the subdirectories on these shares becomes very slow and mostly hangs the explorer.
When I access shares on my XP PC from this laptop everything works fine.

Looking around on the internet for vista and samba problems,
I found several articles about changing the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
LmCompatibilityLevel from 3 (default) to 1
But this don't work

Maybe its the same problem as in this topic.
http://forum.qnap.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=316
This is also only vista related.

Any idea is welcome.

1. Model name : TS-109
2. Firmware version : 1.1.1 Build 0831T

Problem Solved

Postby bvanbeusichem » Thu Oct 04, 2007 4:05 am

The problems I had with the TS109 are solved.
- Browsing / Copying from Vista Laptop to NAS hangs explorer.
- Connect to USB printer (IP4200 on TS109) impossible.

What I did:
- changed regsetting on Vista Laptop to change NTLMV2 to NTLMv1
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel to 1

- Update firmware on the NAS to the latest Beta Firmware 1.1.2 Build 928T
After this update the browsing problem was solved, can connect to printer.
- Via google found an article about Vista printer problems with Norton Internet Security installed. (This was pre-installed from factory)
- Uninstalled Norton Internet Security
After the uninstall the printer works direct fine.
(You have to disable bi-directonal support on the printer driver)

- Install Avast free virus scanner and enabled Vista Firewall,
Everything works fine now.

HKLM is indeed HKey Local Machine.
NTLMv1 or NTLMv2 is the type of protocol. Vista use default v2.
To be compatible with older version you have to set the registry key LmCompatibilityLevel to 1 (This key is located on HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa)

Ok but what are the collateral consequences by choosing V1 instead of V2? I guess they updated the protocle for a good reason...
I exeprienced such an hang on too, is it supposed to be fixed with latest firmware or not?
Thanx in advance.

Can it really be that this is still an issue? I get strange behaviour sometimes when browsing shares on a TS-119 with latest firmware, Vista Explorer acting strangely, crashing, hanging, being annoying...

I beleive it still is.
I have a TS209 Pro with the latest (v3) firmware and I am experiencing this problem as well. All works fine on from my XP desktop, but from my Vista laptop it's a nigtmare.

I tried setting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel to both the value 1 and 2, but that didn't solve it.

Windows 7 explorer hangs accessing Samba Shares

Postby gwenolan » Tue Nov 03, 2009 8:17 pm

Hi all,

I have the same problem with Official Windows 7 Pro 64bits on my TS-209 PRO II. I followed the QNAP recommendation for NTLM but still have some random hangs. I have Windows 7 RC 32bits on my labtop that do not have the problem !
On my Official Windows 7 Pro (Desktop), I can see my shared files but sometimes, randomly, the connection is cut. And my explorer hangs, impossible to reboot the PC (End Session hangs...). I have to do a reset.
Note that I can access my QNAP over http. So the problem seems to be samba.

Do you have any suggestions ?

Thank you

As I posted in another topic, I have exactly the same problem under Windows 7 Home Premium !!

Some info from my side:

- I'm running McAfee's firewall. Opening or closing ports like 135, 137-139, 445 doesn't really help.
- Tried to shut down the frewall, no effect.
- Network discovery is on. Windows sees the NAS all the time.

After a re-boot the shares work. After a while, when there has been no access, Explorer can't reconnect and
it hangs. Only a reboot helps.

I had some suspicion it has to do with the autodisconnect feature of Windows (15 mins). I didn't try yet whether it helps
or not though. Via the registry you can extend the time or via the command line you could switch it off.

What puzzles me, why there were no problems in Vista.

@Gwennolan:

Have you seen this site/page ?

http://www.tannerwilliamson.com/2009/09/windows-7-seven-network-file-sharing-fix-samba-smb/

It mentions two other settings. I don't have have Ultimate or Pro, so I have to find the corresponding registry
hacks.. make you wonder why Microsoft even makes this distinction between versions.. even heard of Snow Leopard
Ultimate ? Anyways...

In addition, it could help to reboot your NAS as well.

Update: setting the three registry keys + reboot of the Win7 machine + reboot of the QNAPs doesn't help. Funny enough when Explorer hangs I can still access the NAS shares via the Network & Sharing Center.

My current workaround is to map and disconnect the drives each time I have access my NAS drives. Very irritating.
