This is indeed an important feature. I'm the proud new owner of a 419P+ and love it - until I realised I can't quickly search it for the tens of thousands of files I have on it! I'm now copying my work folders back to my local PC so search is quick, which of course completely defeats the purpose of a NAS.

Does QNAP monitor this forum - this question has been live for over 12 months!

:(
1. NAS: TS 419P+, firmware version 3.8.2, port trunking IEEE 802.3ad
2. DISKS: Raid5, 4 drives, all WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N080.0 (3.5TB free), firmware version 80.00A80
3. Accessing via PC running Windows 7

If the original poster is mainly referring to his photo collections I would assume he has some sort of photo catalog / editing software. Some even come free with the camera. I know for sure that Adobe Lightroom keeps a very extensive catalog of photos imported/edited there no matter where they actual fle is stored.

This locally saved catalog allows for very detailed searches within the EXIF data, as in: "show me everything taken between April 2009 and June 2009, labelled church, dimensions not below 1024x768 and take with my 24-70 lens" etc.

If this is the functionaliy the OP is looking for the answer is not overloading a NAS with features only a minoriy will use, but rather investing in the software by himself.

And from my understanding of things a remotely (on the NAS) kept index of files would have to be all compatible with the SAMBA implementation on the Windows clients. From what I know the current versio of SAMBA on liux only include the most important features. On the other hand, a repeatedly updated local (client side) index service is kinda of pointless, because in a lot mof cases multiple peple have access. So if the client relies on the local index whic might be outdated, it might deliver false results. Or it would have to update so ofter that it becomes a terible ressource and bandwidth hog. To make sure a file you look for is there or not on the NAS at the time you look fo it, the NAS has to scan it from A-Z to deliver a reliable result.

+1 to the idea of finding a proper solution to this.

I found a great way to add my QNAP NAS shares to my Window 7 Pro (64 bit) libraries. This may help some people who found their way to this page.

Zorn Software has created a library tool that allows you to edit the folders associated to libraries. It does this with a small application. And it's free!

http://zornsoftware.talsit.info/blog/win7-library-tool.html

I added a photos folder on my NAS to the Pictures library and this has allowed me to use them in the Microsoft Surface Collage tool, which before had been limited to local indexed locations.

I hope this info helps.

I am about to post a swish-e howto. Swish-e is a powerful indexing program. Refer http://www.swish-e.org. Searching is via web based GUI. Prior to installing swish-e, I found that gcc and then perl must be updated from their ipkg versions (have already posted this bit). All these three programs must be compiled from source; there is no ipkg. Should be ready in < one week.

Re: Indexing files feature

My issue with the lack of indexing if for my music which I play with Windows Media Center. Adding a share is easy enough through Windows Media Player which will cache the libraries in "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player". The problem is when you add files to the share directory it doesn't get updated within Media Players database - this is where indexing is required. I have setup a daily bat file that rebuilds the local database and this works for the time being but isn't good when you want your new music available immediately.

Note that this doesn't help with searching through windows explorer but searching for images/videos/music files through Media Player/Media Center is very fast.

People are understanding very different things when it comes to indexing. For most, indexing is to generate a Google-like (test) search index.

@Nexonic: You are looking to extend Microsoft specific and most likely proprietary techniques on indexing resp. distributed indexing here.
