Slow read/write speed on new TS-412 over gigabit network

Postby smarter_fool » Tue Feb 21, 2012 10:23 am

It has not been even a month since my prized purchase and I have noticed painfully slow write speed (approx 130-150KB/sec) and read speed (ranging from 5-10Mb/sec) on eth0 for my TS-412.
The eth0 setting is as follows-

Connection 1000Mbps
MTU-1500
Auto negotiation - enabled
Static IP

My current setup:-
TS-412 firmware 3.6.0
TS-412 with single 3TB Hitachi Desktar 5400rpm (disk space free = 1.7TB)
all devices connected with cat6 cables
Billion 7800n 4 port Gigabit modem router

wired to Dell Studio Inspiron 1535 at 1.0 Gbps
wired to Dell Latitude E6400 at 1.0Gbps

The interesting thing is that with identical setting, and connecting cables when used on eth1 I get read speed of 42-45 Mb/sec and write speed ranging from 35-40Mb/sec.

I have searched through the forum and the closest I have seen related to my issue is inked with HDD being almost full but I have more than half still free for use and eth1 port working at expected transfer speeds.

I have restored the NAS to factory settings re-formatted my HDD but still same issue.

I have also tried this on my Seagate 160GB hdd with identical results.

What could be wrong? Is it because eth0 is faulty?

If it is then am I entitled for a replacement straight away or it has to be RMA'd?
I have scanned through some horror stories about re the QNAP RMA process.

You are trying to use both ports in Trunking mode? Does your router/switch support port aggregation? (I doubt it...)

Nope, I am not using both the LAN ports at the same time and hence, no port trunking :(
My eth0 was giving me dismal speed and then I decided to switch to eth1.

Okie, I have finally given up fixing this up on my own even after rolling back to 3.5.2.
Luckily, I have the QNAP Dealer near my office and now there is the agonising wait, which I must add is even more depressing than the transfer speed on my NAS.

I also am having slow transfer speed issues.
I have a ts-412 with Version 3.6.0 build 0210T on a gigabit network with a single 3tb Western Digital green.

IP: Static
Trunking: None
MTU: Default, 1500
IPv6: Enabled, Auto Configuration
EXT4 with write cache enabled. tried without cache, no difference.

Microsoft Networking enabled for Windows 7 clients, same workgroup and network as the clients.

Tell us more about the exact TS-412 network configuration (cbaling, switches, ports, port trunking, concurrent cocnnected interfaces, ...

Original post reports resonable performance when using eth1 - so that looks like a very specific issue to me:

So what is the speed you see?

It's unlikely to be causing slow performance problems already now if the disk is fairly new but that disk is by WD specifically not recommended for NAS use: WD Caviar Green Hard Drives are not recommended for and are not warranted for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications.

Add that Qnap also does not recommend using them. Other WD Green models have given an extremely bad user experience as reported in extremely long and tragic threads here in the forum.
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Well, he has just one HDD in place, so te RAID-exclusion might not apply 8)

Well it will if the OS decides the HDD is taking too long to recover an error and drops it - RAID or not it may decide the drive has gone bad.

Yes Schumaku, maybe you're correct if interpreting the text literally but we probably shouldn't be looking for loopholes, but rather listen to the general message sent from the manufacturer. I don't know about the rest of you but my time and peace of mind are too important for me to wanting to gamble with solutions that are on the brink of disaster.

All literal interpretations aside, what Crush says is important.

In addition to that; as soon as any disk (WD Green or not), and regardless of disk configuration choosen, is added to the NAS (not unlikely to happen in a 4-bay NAS), the RAID-disclaimer from WD applies. Since I learned this from you, I know you know it very well...

The saga continues

I have been told that my unit has arrived and no problem was found on eth0. The re-seller advised me that the RMA support is local and he suggested I ring the support personnel who prepared a 10 page report on my NAS Ethernet performance using a RAID10 setup.

Now I have not seen the report and I am praying that the problem somehow would have been resolved ( :?: )

My friend who is more knowledgeable advised me that RAID10 will obviously return high read and write performance and I that would have to clarify the situation with the support person directly. But the performance using RAID10 is only comparative i.e. as I was only getting speeds in KB/sec on eth0 and I cannot expect miraculous 40-45 Mb/sec speeds on RAID10 for the same port unless something has been done at software or hardware level.

At least I would have someone local to call and troubleshoot the problem. Till then......

All done with your NAS and your disks? So there must be an issue with your network, network switch, cabling, client configuration, ...

there are several reports - ie. on broken or poor-performing cheap and elderly GbE switches (most in routers) breaking the performance. Another interesting one is that Apples Internet Sharing must be disabled on the rspective lcient system to avoid strange performance effects, too.

Nope, as I have indicated in my original post, I only had one 3TB Hitachi Deskstar HDD and when you RMA the unit you shall not handover your precious HDD!

Furthermore, in my original post I did mention that my eth1 works perfectly fine with the same set of cables, same router/Gigabit switch (YES! the whole shabang) and hence, I highly doubt that this is a problem related to my network and other components.

Well anyway, I am interstate and plan to pick up my unit on Tuesday because Monday is a public holiday {mixed emotions as I am dying to test my NAS and happy because its an extra day off}

All right!

Well it seems the problem has gone away with firmware 3.6.1!!!!!
When I received the unit I just plugged in my 160GB Seagate HDD and was getting the same deal with speed in Kb/sec.

But I noticed that QNAP finder suggesting new firmware available and I decided to update it.

I also noticed in the release notes that there were some bug fixes for port trunking and though I was not interested in that I still decided to give it a go.

It took me 5-10 minutes and my system was up and running with write speed of 40-42 MB/sec on eth! [woot]

So if you are experiencing any problems with your eth1 in terms of slow speeds then I would highly recommend to upgrade your firmware to 3.6.1

Over and out :)

Dragging this one up because I was having similar problems with read/write speed to my TS-412.

Question is, what's the normal read/write speed for a Gigabit Ethernet connection to NAS?
