Streaming from 412 to Mac

Hello everyone,
I just got my first QNAP, a 412. I just connected and started to learn basic operations. My very first question is: can I use it to store video files (like divx) and stream them to a Mac which I use as my primary computer here at home? I did some basic research but it's not completely clear to me.
I'd love to continue using VLC as player on my Mac. Is there any additional plugin I have to install on the QNAP? Any special procedure/setting to take care?
I'd be grateful if you point me in the right direction...
