Mounting external USB DVD reader/writer

Postby cinnamondonkey » Sun Dec 06, 2009 3:02 am

Hi,

I have a TS-210 and I would like to know if it is possible to mount an external USB DVD reader/writer.

Although long term writing would be nice I am mostly interested in reading, specifically for backing up DVDs to ISOs.

Can you please tell me if this will be possible.

Thank you!

The 'dmesg' command can be used to show recent system messages.

Using this command after connecting the external USB DVD ROM drive displays something like:

Code: Select all
> dmesg
.
.
usb 1-1.3: new high speed USB device using ehci_marvell and address 4
usb 1-1.3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
1.ehci_marvell.70059
2.1.3
scsi19 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
scsi 19:0:0:0: CD-ROM            HP       DVD Writer 840b  FF66 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
scsi 19:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg19 type 5
usb-storage: device scan complete

This shows that the device has been recognised and is located at '/dev/sg19'

I have two problems now though:

1. 'dd if=/dev/sg19 of=/share/Public/test.iso' just seems to hang.
2. Mounting the device fails

Code: Select all
> mkdir /dvdrom
> mount -t iso9660 /dev/sg19 /dvdrom
mount: /dev/sg19 is not a block device

Any help will be great!

I gave up as the forum was dry and no-one was interested in helping...

How about yourself?

Same message trying mount the unit

usb 1-1.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_marvell and address 8
usb 1-1.1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
1.ehci_marvell.70059
2.1.1
scsi8 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 8
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
scsi 8:0:0:0: CD-ROM slimtype eSAU108 3 HL06 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
scsi 8:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg8 type 5
usb-storage: device scan complete

[/dev] # mount -t iso9660 /dev/sg8 /share/Public/CD/
mount: /dev/sg8 is not a block device

The related link is about recording erasable media.
I believe this must not be very hard.... if people is recording.... reading must be easy

USB 2.0 is too slow too stream DVD data anyway, so I really don't see the point of this exercise. (Your TS-210 only has a USB 2.0 controller in it)

Wouldn't it be easier to use it with your PC/Mac, and then use software such as imgburn to rip your DVD's to ISO's. Once your "disks" are turned into ISO's, they can be uploaded to your NAS, and "mounted" on your NAS without any form of optical device attached to your NAS at all.

Check out: WebUI > Access Right Management > Share Folders > ISO SHARE FOLDERS (tab)
Image

See the ISO Share Folders subsection within the Share Folders section of the QNAP Turbo NAS User Manual for information on this feature.

Caveat: Please be aware that many MediaPlayers can load ISO's directly, so you should not need to "mount" your Audio/Video ISO's at all.
