Greetings from Switzerland

Postby gzhtub » Mon Mar 19, 2012 8:00 pm

Hi, I am a new owner of a QNAP TS-412 Turbo NAS with 3 x 2TB HDs in a RAID 5 config. I currently use it as a multimedia ctr with over 2.5TB of data - all fine so far (latest firmware).
I access the NAS from an iMac, a couple of Windows 7 laptops (32 & 64 bit), plus my Android 4.0.x Mobile; again all works file, although the Mac looses connection now & again.
I connect via a Swisscom Grande Router (not sure which model this is) at speeds of up to 8MB/s, so not fast enough to stream HD movies as yet.
The MyCloudNAS does not seem to be able to automatically configure the Router, hence I have trouble accessing my files over the net (may need to call Swisscom on this).
I am also unable to setup email notifications so far (but not yet a serious issue). I Think I will add another 2TB HD soon, as the free space is now below 1TB.
All-in-all a great product. PS: Any ideas on the network access would be appreciated, esp. from Swiss English speakers.

Regards, Greg, Lausanne.

PS: Forgot to mention that AV updating does not work either, probably part of my email notification setup problem? :-)

Hi Greg,

Probably yes. Is the NAS able to resolve IP addresses from names? Check the DNS settings. In case of using DHCP, ensure the DHCP server is providing valid IP addresses for one to three domain servers.

Is that on the pure LAN side (the switched Ethernet network, are are you thinking baout streaming HD media over a VDSL2 uplink - especially one fro Swisscom with latency times for the first few 100 meters as other provuders need for half the world?

Hm don't know what average feee hardware Swisscom is providing with thewir services. Need to check the Swisscom ressources, or brower some national support forums. However, I'm sosmewhat busy during daytime. Potentially, it's just the UPnP manageability of the router which needs to be enabled?

Alternate, you still have the option to add port forwardings manually.

Hope this helps to keep you busy for some time

I have a CISCO small business router and it took me a while to get the UPNP working. In the end it was the router deciding to remember that UPNP had been enabled. I think there was a problem with me understanding how to set the router up for it - it now works fine. Maybe the Swisscom has the same issue?

Thanks for all the useful info (sorry if this is not the right forum for it), I did try to enable uPNP, but as you say maybe the Router forgets about it? :-)
I also tried manual port forwarding, but you cannot set the port no. on the Swisscom router interface, just choose 'services', which I did & it doesn't work. :-(
I will check some of the other settings tonight, I am not trying to stream large files (video) over the internet, just access my music collection (for example) while at work, or allow relatives to up/download files (photos) to/from the NAS from other countries. As I said, everything works fine at home (on the same network), and maybe works OK as an Admin remotely (not sure)?
I created a simple read only user account, and tried to use that direct via the IP address, and via the MyCouldNAS, but neither of these worked for me (so far).
Regards, Greg.

I tried the manual setting as well and it didn't work - in the end i had to undo a lot of the manual forwarding then carefully set the UPnP in the router - it seemed that making one change then saving, rinse and repeat eventually got it working. I had a browser window open for eac the QNAP admin and the router admin and tested on QNAP to see if it now thought the router was UPnP compatable after i made each change on the route.

Just one last update: I did manage to get remote web access to work via mycloudnas.com (eventually) but only for web file access - as mentioned in other posts here.
I then tried to add another 2TB disc to my array, without realizing that this could take 2.5 to 3 days! The operation failed after c.30h at c.50%. The Raid 5 on the 3 old discs seemed fine, so I rebooted (big mistake). I then had an inactive raid 5 which could not be recovered & an unmounted (global spare). Nothing I could do could recover from this, so I lost c.2TB of data it had taken me over a year and hundreds of dollars to collect (some things are irreplacable) - pretty upsetting as you can imagine, I bought this $300+ box to avoid just this sort of situation.
I tried to free up the RAID, etc. & start again, but after 24h it had still not initialized the new RAID5 with 4 x 2TB discs, so I switched it off. I will try one more time to reset the whole thing, and if this fails am going back to external discs on my PC (sell the NAS oneBay). I am extremely disappointed with the QNAP-NAS, which is slow & prone to failures you cannot correct.
Warning to anyone else: get ALL your discs in advance; backup the vital data you cannot afford to loose; avoid adding discs or migrating; to tfr files the first time, connect the PC direct to the Router, do not use the WiFi, and copy all your files to the NAS - I didn't find this tip in the official docs.
So,l this is my last post here, goodbye & good luck - you'll need it...

hi, its a RV042 10/100 4-port router. I use access points so this is strictly wired.
