Remote Replication

Postby gbannister » Thu Mar 29, 2012 10:34 pm

Hello,

We have multiple sites with Qnap NAS installed. They work great until I want to setup the remote replication. I have two at HQ and they work great. The sites are connected to HQ via VPN connection. When I try and setup the job under the RTRR I cannot see the either server. Is there anything I need to do on our firewall to enable this to work? I can access the admin tools on the remote sites NAS's via an IP address or device name within an Internet Browser.

Any help would much appreciated.

Assuming the VPN is fully transparent, and allows all services in any diretion - no. Figure otherwise...

Yes the VPN is bi-directional and allows all services through. It is strange as I can access all the files/shares on the remote NAS but I cannot setup a replication job.

Have you enabled the Real-time Remote Replication server on the Backup Server page?

No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Yes, the backup server is already working with RTRR on two servers at HQ. Its only when I try to setup a remote sync job when I hit problems. They do not see each other. When setting up the job as soon as I click Test it comes up with Failure.

I believe it is only the RemoteReplication process itself that uses the port # 873, so I would check router/FW/vpn to see that this port is actually open both ways.

Thanks for your help. I now have it so I can see the two servers I want to replicate but it doesn't allow me to select Real Time as an option. Can you tell me why please?

You make it very hard for anybody to help when you're not saying what you've actually done but I'll make one attempt at guessing. Maybe you've choosen the option Remote folder to local folder? I think real-time mode isn't supported when a remote folder is the source.
