Setting up website on NAS, super confused.

Postby ctrlalltdel » Mon Apr 09, 2012 6:03 am

So I followed the HOW TO tutorials on how to activate the web server and use dynamic domain on my NAS.

I went to dyndns and created 2 host name services. When I type either into my URL address bar I see my NAS web server set up page which is great.

I own a domain which I registered and manage at Domain.com. When I type in my domain into the url, i want to see my website.

The issue is that when I try to add the 2 new dyndns host name services in Domain.com, I receive this message:

"Unable to Change Name Servers with Registry, or invalid Name Server."

Is this a problem with Domain.com or am I completely lost and doing something wrong?

Hi,

I haven't seen the domain.com's web interface at all, but generally here is how DNS works:
You have two possibilities, one is IP based (type A) dns settings. In this case you must have a fix ip in the location where you have the NAS, so you have to type in the IP address (WAN address) of your network.

Another possibility is to create a CNAME record in the dns settings. In that case, you do not have to type in an IP address, but an another domain name -- in this case your dyndns host.

Here is a screenshot about CPanel (popular dns-setup software) to see more clearly what I'm tryint to talk about :)

Not sure why do you need 2 dyndns account by the way, but please look some Zone Record settings in the Domain.com web interface, and change it like this.
One more thing is that - unfortunately - you can't create CNAME record for the "main" domain, only A.

So as an example you can create a cname record to www.mydomain.com --> myacc.dyndns.org
but you cannot for the mydomain.com (so without the www. ot anything) --> only IP based (type A)

When somebody types in into the browser mydomain.com --> it should point somewhere... if you do not have a fix ip, check if you have or not 1-2MB free space which is given by the hosting company (domain.com)
If you have some space there, create a .htaccess file, which redirects the non-www url to the www.mydomain.com.

Like this, when sy type in the mydomain.com, it will reach your htaccess file, which redirects to the www.mydomain.com, which has a CNAME record point to the dyndns account, which is updated by your NAS.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Robert

The crucial question is if your DNS supplier does allow to create a CNAME to ie. a DDNS host as in Robert's example, 3rd line.

What does not work in the contaxt of virtual hosts (in general, not NAS specific) is the URL Forwarding, ie. redirect ie. a www.yourdomain.com to yourddnsname.dyndns.org for example. The Web server must - as it's listening on a single IP address only - recevie the GET for a specific (virtual) host, so he can provide the appropriate virtual Web pages.

Okay, so I checked the settings in Domain.com and they do have a section where you can assign CNAMES. I added the host name I created at dyndns.

Attached are screenshots of the relevant admin panels.

As you can see in one of them, the listed Name Servers are NS23.CIRTEXHOSTING.COM and NS24.CIRTEXHOSTING.COM , which is what I was using for a previous website set up. I was under the impression that I was supposed to replace these name servers with the ones I created at dyndns.com

The sub domain / CName Server field looks promosing.

No, these are the name servers for your domain ... that's perfectly fine.
