kmonza wrote:Google just released Google Cloud Print which allows printing from anywhere to your home or office printer (http://goo.gl/y0P3X). Right now, this feature is only available through Chrome, but should evolve with time to something more standalone with Cloud Print-aware printers, and connectors. Currently, the pc and chrome must be on to be able to proxy the request to the printer.

Google relies on the developers' community to build these connectors, and my first thought was "Hey, that would be awesomely perfect for my NAS". I am not a developer, and would have no idea where to start, but I'm sure that this would make a lot of sense for a lot of people too, and so I thought I would just through this out there and propose a "QPKG Google Cloud Print connector".

let's talk about it ... :D

I don't quite understand why Google is needed simply to provide Remote Printing. All of my printers already support remote printing via 9100/TCP.

I simply setup port forwarding in my router to access my printers remotely.

xxxxxxx.mycloudnas.com:9100 > 192.168.1.100:9100 (Lexmark X422)
xxxxxxx.mycloudnas.com:9101 > 192.168.1.101:9100 (HP LJ2605dn)
xxxxxxx.mycloudnas.com:9102 > 192.168.1.102:9100 (HP LJ1012)

I then simply install all 3 printers in all my machines to print to xxxxxxx.mycloudnas.com:9100, xxxxxxx.mycloudnas.com:9101, xxxxxxx.mycloudnas.com:9102 to reach each of my printers.

My Router supports NAT-loopback, so these printer assignments even work when my Laptop is "home", and on my local network. No google required.

Whilst I do exactly as you do, you have to think how clever other people are.
As an IT manager, I see all sorts of skill (and skill-less) levels. My brother in law for instance has a Qnap and loves it, but I set it up and he can do nothing with it except what I've tought him. He is a clever bloke, but all this "Qnap thingy" goes over his head unfortunately.

I think perhaps you miss the point of simplicity.
Type in an email address and password at both ends, the qnap and the, what, Android Tablet for instance - and then it just works.
Many many many more people will benefit. Got to be an advantage in my books.

Yes - and the thin clients like the Anroid phones and tablets can't use these printers using port forwarding at all.

You both have very valid points. Please note I wasn't being smug about it. When I said "I don't quite understand why Google is needed", that was a genuine statement. Your responses both provide answers to my question. Thank-you for sharing. I appreciate it. Now I do understand why Google (Print Connector) is needed, thanks again for responding to my question.

Patrick.
