Panic Mode: Did I just bork a RAID rebuild?

Postby Kilowattson » Sun Apr 29, 2012 10:37 am

Hey guys. We have an 8 Disk TS-809U-RP Qnap system.

One of the disks went bad so I ordered a replacement (exact same size and model).

I powered down the system. Replaced the disk. Powered it back up. It stuck in "Mounting Volume - Please Wait." For about 24 hours.

It's done this before and a hard reboot has been the only fix. So after waiting 24 hours we did a hard reboot. Now it has booted up to "Starting Service - Please Wait" and seems to be stuck on that.

I can login to the web interface and check some basic stuff, and most of our folders show up - just at 0k (which would be devestating).

So I'm trying to figure out if the RAID is rebuilding, or if I totally f***ed our system.

What should my next steps be?

When I go into RAID Management - the RAID 5 array we have is listed as "Not Active" with the only operation I can execute as "Recover."

I'm hesitant to select that at this time.

In your situation I would contact Qnap support for assistance.

No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Ok. Update. I have filed a ticket and tried to call them, but alas it is sunday so no dice. I can't wait to monday to I had to attempt what I could.

After several starts and stops and fails I finally noticed that the raid rebuild kept stopping at 28%. I got a notice of an access error on Disk 4 (remember Disk 3 was the original faulty disk).

I thought that was weird as I had never gotten any errors on it until now. I ran tests on them and got that disk 3 was having read/write fails and Disk 4 was having read failures, but that they were within the acceptable limit.

It appears, however, that the double whammy is just preventing a RAID rebuild.

So as of now the server is in degraded read only mode.

Luckily, after about 4 restarts, I was able to FTP into it and am, at the moment, attempting to backup the 4 TB of data on it. It's slow going but working for the time being. Crossing my fingers.
